when I built my Ryzen 3700X I reused an old case. So I took out the 3.5" drive cages and put them somewhere, thinking I would not need them. FF to today I need to mount a SATA SSD and I cannot find the drive cages... So, I use a adapter to convert the ssd to 3.5" size, then another one to 5.25", then install quick release rails on that. But the 3.5" to 5.25" adapter prevents me from using the cable from the psu to connect power because it is a right angle plug and well, that was not going to work. So I had to find a sata power extender cable that is straight.

Yes, I had all those adapters, cables and screws but it was a pain. I just know I'll run into the drive cage in a few days.

For next time. With no moving parts SATA SSD's are not fragile and don't really require special mounting brackets.

3M double-sided tape $2.99 @ Target

Lol! I actually did that on a rig a few years ago. Didn’t have a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter on hand. Two short strips and the drive was immovable! Oh, about a month later I found an adapter sitting on a table amongst other miscellaneous computer parts. Double plus oh, it had an ssd in it with the same capacity in it!

With SATA drives you can get away with not even mounting them at all ... not that I'm suggesting it!

Lol I always end up using tape for SSDs or just letting them dangle around. Whenever I buy one I never remember to buy a bracket too and I don't want to delay my whole build just for that so it goes in there and that's that.

Tape does not dissipate heat :colbert:

I have NVME drives that get hot enough to burn your finger (looking at you Crucial P5) but I've never owned a SATA SSD that got more than slightly warm.

Not even the really early/inefficient models like the "massive" 5.25 inch Intel 60gb(?) drive that was my first SSD got hot and the Samsung's I used a bit later really didn't change temps noticeably at all either.

To be fair I would not suggest using tape for more than a temporary fix with mechanical drives unless a fan is pointed right at the drive in question. Also forget about the heat, unless you use the permanent/heavy duty kind of tape (which is a bitch to remove) the HD can potentially vibrate lose and be damaged.

Is that a bad thing?

I'm 157m...good enough.
Ugh, only 80m. I do live about a kilometer from the Merrimack river. Basically a valley made by the glaciers when they retreated. I also live 35 miles from the sea - so I think I’m safe.

I have a performance review today and my level of not giving a f' about performance reviews has gone to god-level not caring about performance reviews. To be honest, my lack of concern is starting to concern me a bit. I'm not in any danger of getting fired and going from good performance to stellar performance nets a bonus that goes from meh to whatever. The only way to move up is to supervise more and I hate being a supervisor so even that incentive is meh.

got an email that looks like paypal that says I got C$9.97 coming into my paypal account. This is a surprise since I don't sell on ebay nor was I expecting a refund. Spent some time looking into email origin and everything look fine. Then I get an email saying the rebate for detergent (buy 3 get 1 free) was approved and will be sent to my paypal...
I didn't give them my paypal addr :colbert:

and no I didn't click on any link on that email. the rebate site did not mention what form the rebate would come in.

who decided this is a good use of screen real estate? Like why does the sub forum name take up so much space? None of the sub forum names even reach 50% of the horizontal space.

Getting aggravated. I have upgraded my network to 802.11ax (WiFi 6) for my router and our two main desktops. I just noticed that file transfers to my backup server max out at 800mbps and average about 650mbps. So, a few hundred $$s gains me slower performance than my old 802.11ac setup (peak transfer rate of about ~900mbps**). Waste of money. Now I just want to rewire the house with 10GBE:

** Stupid idjut, 900mbps was when I had it wired. I thought that WiFi 6 could do a max of 1.2gbps per stream up to two streams. Turns out, none of the consumer models can hit those speeds. Max is about 950mbps for the fastest (and very expensive) models.

ATT is giving 350 down/up connected but their wireless modem sucks. Looking for suggestions. The house footprint is only 1450sqft. The netgear range extenders cut those numbers by 3/4.

Edit tp-link.

Was at Costco today and they have had these six self-checkout lanes for quite a while now. At first people would only go through them with not many items. You'd actually self checkout. Then Costco started adding staff to man like three of the six self-checkout lanes. They have a portable scanner in their hand and they basically check you out even though it's self-checkout. There is no sign there saying you can only go with x amount of items or less. I live alone so I really never have more than 10 items, so I always go to self-checkout. I could care less if an employee is available to help scan my items or not. The self checkout lanes fit three in the same space where one regular checkout lane goes. There isn't a lot of space to put items to scan. It's common sense this is a place to go when you don't have too much shit.

Anyways lately I've been seeing people go through them with lots more shit in their cart, because people are dumb and annoying. Today I saw a lady with a cart almost full, and not of big things, like say cases of water, but like tons of small and medium sized things, and the Costco employee is scanning everything. It's a slow process because they don't have a surface to put all those items on, and separate what's been scanned vs what has not been scanned. They have to do it all while it's in the cart, lifting shit up, etc... So the lady that's scanning my shit I ask her, is there a limit to how many items you can bring to self-checkout? She says it's supposed to be 20.

I'm like well people are going with way more and it must be a real PITA to scan when you don't have a surface area to work with. She said yes it is. I say do you tell them about the item limit? She says yes, and they get mad and rude. So they just do it for them. I'm like fuck these mofos.

I'd say Costco is to blame, not the people going through with full carts. Other stores would rather people with full carts use the self checkouts so they can cut staff.

I agree, Costco should have a sign about the 20 item limit. But it's also common sense to see how little space there are to put items and realize that it's a bitch, and much more prone to error, to scan a ton of shit when it's piled on top of itself in a cart.

Common sense! I don’t think that is 'common' anymore. When I was growing up, it seemed like all the adults had common sense. Nowadays, meh. I won’t even shop with my wife at Walmart anymore - it’s like a zoo for people with low IQs.

Anyway, yeah, they need a sign.

I was gonna say .... COMPLAINING about legit 800mbs over ANY wifi?

o_O

Half that speed consistently IRL is pretty dang good. Wifi's rated speeds are so wildly inaccurate it s/b considered fraud.
