Was talking with someone today and the great reset got brought up , and they said it already started, and when you think about it, it makes sense. All this smart stuff is the beginning. When your items remove control or spy on you or only work with an account tied to the cloud - ex your phone, you don't really own it anymore, it owns you. It's the very start of the utopia the powers that be are going for. They will eventually make everything not only smart, but also subscription based. There are already companies trying to push that with washer and dryers where you're basically renting it and it's internet connected and will stop working if you don't pay the subscription fee. You will own nothing and be happy.

Just read an article the other day about car companies doing the same with actual features in the car like seat heaters. Not in any car I'll ever buy but I'm sure a bunch of suckers will go for it.

Of course I'm also into crazy stuff like changing my own gears so what the heck do I know?

I've spent a lot of time thinking about smarthomes & modern home materials and have settled on simplicity with manual backup whenever possible. Over time, I've shifted everything to Alexa. Endpoint equipment varies, but the convenience of voice has trumped everything else. I used to want to do a lot of custom stuff, but these days, 99% of my needs & wants are met by off-the-shelf products, which is pretty cool!
 
The protection shelf for my cell phone broke at the corner so I had to toss it away so now my old cell phone is in comando mode. Time for a new cell phone soon.
 
Realised that I'm downloading an average of 23 hours worth of podcasts every day. It's pretty-much impossible for me to ever listen to them all.

Bonus first world problem: had to use the 'search' function to find the 'first world problem' thread to post this.
 
I have a hard time getting to podcasts. I was downloading stuff of general interest as well as news to give balance to npr, but I just never get to them if I have to do something to listen. I wish radio was more varied. I like turning it on, and getting a dumb feed. If it's interesting, I pay close attention, if not, I can do other stuff while it drones in the background. I haven't listened to a podcast in months.

I've become slightly-obsessive about them. In part I think it may be because my eyes have deteriorated to the point where I find reading much more tiring than it used to be, even with glasses (had perfect vision for most of my life, then started going through new 'prescriptions' for thicker and thicker lenses at a distressing rate). Also more-and-more news-and-comment sources on the web are behind paywalls, podcasts seem to be one of the last free sources of information and knowledge left. Narrative history and current politics seem to constitute the majority of those I subscribe to.

But it does take _time_ to listen to the things. Feels like as one gets older money becomes less of a limiting factor in consumption and time becomes much more of one.
 
I just had one of my micro USB charger cables become frayed. I've never owned an Apple product so this is not something I'm used to having happen to me. I guess that's what I get for buying a 5 pack of cables for $2. lol.

Apple doesn't use micro USB, that might be your problem.

Yeah they use whatever standard it is they want for that phone's generation. This is not for an Apple though, was just poking fun because Apple cables seem to always be frayed and since I've never owned one it's not something I'm used to having happen to me. 😛
 
Well this sucks. I just discovered I have TWO drives that failed on one of my raid 10 arrays. For whatever reason I never got an alarm for it. Who knows how long it's been like this. Guess I need to order 2 drives and hope another does not fail... At least these are only 2TB drives so not TOO expensive to replace.
 
I guess I never even had an alarm point setup for that array... oops.

Double checked my backups and they seem to be good, so I got that going for me, but it's still going to suck if I lose the array, lot of VMs to rebuild. I don't really have a way to live backup the entire VMs so I just backup the actual data. We used to use vranger at work but I don't know of a free solution for that.

ETA of 13 days for new drives to be delivered. Doh. Well this is going to be nerve wracking lol.

I need to try to see if I can find someone local with a 10TB drive I can borrow so I can at least do a verbatim copy of the entire array so it will be less hassle to deal with if it does fail.
 
I signed up to switch from DSL to fixed 5G as it is cheaper and twice as fast. The tech spent an hour on my roof playing with an antenna. The signal is too weak so DSL is still my only choice for internet. 🙁

Yeah, just another 2020 sucks thing. Was taking a right hand sweeper to merge onto a major road; car in front of me panic stops; I panic stop right behind their bumper - there was a car coming - about 100 meters away #@$%@^&! This plus another 100 this year, and that's just around town (small city).

Just from this morning alone, I saw with my own eyes not one, not two, not three, but several moving violations within my 15-20 minutes commute.

1. Excessive speeding, not just a little, in residential and then construction/merging lanes area.
2. Busy texting/chatting..therefore, sitting at the green light until I pushed the horn to notify the driver to move along at least twice at two different stop lights.
3. Last minute merging..causing the vehicle behind to slam on the brake on the interstate...and then domino effect toward the vehicle behind and so on.
4. This is the worse one. All vehicles stopped at the red light at a multi lanes intersection and a vehicle just ran the red light like it was green. Luckily there was no other vehicle in that line or in that intersection. Yike about what could happen..major t bone accident.
5. More of #2.

Good grief.

bought a new 3-in-1 winter jacket that's slightly longer than my old 3-in-1.
it goes down to my hips instead of my waist.
and it doesnt have a double zipper at the bottom.

so to reach for my phone, i have to unzip most of the way down to get to it.

for my old 3-in-1 i had 2 options to get to my phone, which is on a belt clip.
1) it was short enough that i could just lift it up a little to get to my phone
2) it has a double zipper at the bottom so i can unzip from the bottom up thus still leaving my upper body nice and warm

looks like im donating a good winter jacket to goodwill soon

At this point I only buy coats that have side and bottom zippers.
 
Self inflicted. Making a cajon drum box for the kid, a surprise. 12x12x18. Why is one side 24? Yep, already glued it up.

He's 6'4",150, maybe he won't notice.
