I'm contemplating a Santa Monica trip this winter. I saw that the Metro station in Santa Monica is now operational so I thought I could avoid renting a car and just take the train from LAX to Santa Monica. Except that the train doesn't actually reach LAX. It gets sorta close but then just doesn't get there. I read that Metro and the airport authority are working on a fix but why LA? Why?
Somewhere inbetween NIMBY's and LA's love of cars, a direct line to LAX was put on the backburner. Further, the flyaway bus from Santa Monica -> LAX was cancelled this week.
Now having said that, a few notes:
1) the Expo line goes from Santa Monica -> Downtown where you can connect to all the other stuff. We're still waiting for a few cars actually, so at the moment the Expo line is > 100% capacity very often. If you visit later (ie non tourist season), this might not be a big deal.
2) With the advent of Uber/Uber Pool, it is OUTRAGEOUSLY cheap to get from LAX -> Santa Monica. Probably $15 on UberX.
