I have the munchies and have nothing in the house of that nature, but everything is closed. We used to have a 24/7 grocery store but they close at 11 now. :/

That was a real fad for a while, wasn't it? Pretty much all the major chains around here had at least one store open all night. Now I don't think anyone does.

I tend to be a night person so being able to do my shopping at 3AM was kind of cool. I guess there weren't enough people who wanted it. Either that or it was too much of a distraction for the night crew packing out.

Now I think there is one 24 pharmacy w/in a 5 mile radius and a couple of all-night convenience stores. Other than that, you're talking diner or Dunkin Donuts.

Yeah our Walmart used to be 24/7 even, then the switched to midnight, then 11, then 10. I don't know what it's at now. I used to love doing my groceries at the nearby grocer at like 1-2am as well. But guess they could not justify leaving it open.

I don't believe that you live up there and don't have a gun... Go shoot some dinner.

Everything is hibernating and the ice is too thin to fish due to the heatwave. #eskimoproblems

Hmmm, Tim Hortons is open though. That, and a poutine place, is like the only thing left that's 24/7. Screw it, box of Timbits it is! May as well get a coffee too. 😛

Not even sure why I have the munchies this bad, I just ate not that long ago.

I was wondering about that. I'm even in the US, and there's a 24/7 Tim Hortons only a few miles away.

I think it's just driven by the local population. The nearest Walmart, Meijer and a couple fast food places are open 24 hours. When I lived 30 minutes east of there I think only Walmart was open 24 hours. If they aren't getting the late night business to be worth staying open, they'll change their ours over time.

I guess so.

Nearby that's 24/7 that I know of:
- Walmart (I think I've got three supercenters within 15 miles)
- Giant Eagle (grocery chain)
- Tim Hortons
- McDonalds
- At least 4 gas stations/convenience stores

So once my manager and I were traveling for work, I think it was Washington DC, and we were at a job site until sometime around 3am. That's when we discovered that that section of DC doesn't really "do" 24hr stores or restaurants. I think we finally ended up getting something to eat at one of the few gas stations that was always open. We were both so acclimated to having 24hr readily available that it was something of a surprise to see so many businesses completely closed at night.

Not me personally, but when I went to the dentist this morning, there was a guy in the waiting room who was having his daughter read him the medical history form and fill it out for him.

Based on the prompts I overheard, I gather he was illiterate. 🙁

Had a Hershey bar for breakfast this morning. That means all I get for lunch is a protein shake or else I can't have the biscuits and gravy bake I've been craving tonight.

Illiteracy is a problem in the third world too, right?

That's a much bigger problem than most people realize because of the stigma and embarrassment people feel over this. As a result, they do their best to hide the fact.

I've thought about volunteering for LVA (literacy volunteers of America) but I'm not sure I could make the sort of long term commitment they would like. Plus people aren't really my "thing." But if you have the time and interest, it's supposed by extremely rewarding and there is a huge need.

my 20000 calorie serving of french fries is luke warm, which means I will only eat 5-10 of them and have to suffer through food waste guilt as I toss the rest into the trash.

The 24/7 fad was because someone convinced companies that a closed store was 12 hours of potentially lost business and wasted resources..which is true to a degree, until you figure in pay and everything else associated with it, and how you barely ever make that amount of money.

Plus add in your losses from 3 am robberies, drunks trashing your store...

I don't know if someone told me this or I just assumed it. I think an asst manager or someone like that told me but I can't be sure.

Anyway, what I remember is that since the night crew is there packing out to restock the shelves anyway, it wasn't that much additional expense to keep the store open. Basically all you needed was a cashier.

I suspect that they changed how they stock shelves because when I go during the day now, there are always at least a couple people unloading boxes. So I don't know if they have a night shift anymore.

I got a jury summons today... for next week. MFingMFers. The online weasel out form doesn't work so I have to call them tomorrow to weasel out. I don't mind jury duty but a one week notice doesn't work, at all. Bozos are bozos.

Went to check the Shanghai markets around 9 pm and they hadn't opened yet. Couldn't figure out why they'd been opening at 10 pm lately....... DST!

Accident on LIE this morning made me take an alternate route to work. It was actually kind of refreshing to change up the same old boring commute.

Our lab manager revoked my lab access at EOBD on Friday, because it had been two years since I took the online safety course. This means he has access to training records.

But in order to get the access back, I had to actually email him a screenshot of the completion certificate, as though he didn't have access to training records.
