That uses a crazy amount of power. I would need to use grid power, we're talking 10's of kw. What I do want to experiment with though is heat pads under the panels, only to melt a thin layer, and hopefully it would make the rest either slide off, or make it easy enough to push off with some kind of actuated brush. The heat would only be needed when there's freezing rain as normal snow will just push off.

How massive is your solar farm?!

I have family that lives in a trailer up in the northeast and they use the pipe warmers and it's nowhere near kw's.

The wife: Figuring out a name for the new dogs AKC registration. Also what shape of ice should I use.

I spent over an hour an hour at home struggling to replace batteries and stop the smoke detectors from chirping only to find out it was one locked away in my roommate's room... and he wasn't home. That would've been a decent FWP on its own, but it just the start.

It was already well past midnight and the chriping would keep me up. I figured I'd crash at my mom's place to kill two birds with one stone, since she wanted help with something in the morning (she still can't figure out how to use her Apple TV).

When I got there I set my Galaxy Note 9 on the night stand beside the bed and went to sleep. It started buzzing in the dark so I started feeling around and it ended up dropping to the floor. Figured it was totally fine since there was carpet and it fell less than two feet. I woke the display and everything looked fine so I went back to sleep.

Turns out there was a pile of tools on the floor between the bed and the night stand... three tin-snips/wire-cutters. Couldn't tell in the dark due to OLED not lighting black areas but the morning light revealed the corner of the screen was totally shattered.

Can't imagine why the snips were loose inside and not in the tool shed or a tool box, so I asked my mother what they were doing there. Her answer: "For you to deal with."

Wha-?! Just what was she expecting me to do with a random pile of tools in her home that have nothing to do with me, my tools, or my home? Rather than answer, she ran off to some appointment and I'm still bewildered by it all. Just going to leave these where I found them, I guess.

Sucks.

Call the dog akcice. Ice should be dog shaped. Both problems solved. You are welcome.

Wife: Both problems are not solved. I don't have dog shaped ice trays. Now another problem has been introduced.

Oh it's only like 400w. But I would need multiple kw to actually be able to melt the snow. I forget what the calculation works out to, but consider the fact that the sun is about 1kw per square meter. If that's not enough to melt snow, then I need more than 1kw per meter.

Eventually I'd like to get it working year round so I can run power to the house though, could run a few small things off it at least. If ever I live off grid then I will install like 30kw of panels and face them vertical so the snow/ice does not stick. Could also use a wood boiler to run hot glycol through them if I need to.

Tried using a 1.8kw heat gun once on my car to see if I could defrost the windows faster, it did nothing. The amount of energy you need to melt ice is actually very high.

The point isn't to melt a huge pile after it fell, the point is to warm the panels before/during the snow so nothing builds up.
If the buildup is to fast, having/being able to melt a thin layer will allow the snow to slide off.

I fully admit I have no practical experience with snow on solar panels, just offering some food for thought.

I decided to format my desktop yesterday cause I wasn't convinced the malware was gone from it. When I'd click in the Search box by the Start button and type something, nothing would happen. I use that feature a lot, just hitting Start and typing to bring up an app, so it's really f'ing annoying. So I just decided to say "f it" and format since I was wary of that malware still being in there anyway.

Well it's usually a straight forward process, but when I went to move my Documents folder to the D: drive, which is something I've done for years and years, I got some "access denied" error. I did a bit of searching and it seems it's maybe due to (a bug?) with OneDrive, and probably why I haven't seen it before is I've only recently switched to OneDrive from Dropbox.

In the process of trying to move the damn folder I ended up adding a bunch of folders I didn't want to OneDrive but thankfully I managed to stop syncing and get the damn things all off it. Ugh. Nothing I tried worked so I reinstalled Windows AGAIN to start over cause OneDrive was kinda dicked up. I guess I'll just have to keep my Documents folder on the C: drive.

The reason I put it on a separate drive is if I format Windows drive I'll have all the stuff I keep in there. I've never had a problem with this but thanks to OneDrive it's dicked up my setup. Not a HUGE deal I guess; my most important stuff is kept in the cloud on OneDrive anyway so if my rig totally shits the bed I'm not really out anything except some pictures (that I just realized I need to move online).

Eh?

Well I think it's something to do with OneDrive, perhaps a bug. That was what I gathered from a bit of searching online for this error, people were talking about OneDrive. I first uninstalled OneDrive and was able to remove some of the folders under it that I was getting an "access denied" for when trying to delete them (removing OneDrive and then moving the Documents folder seemed to be the fix, or A fix anyway) but I couldn't remove all of them.

I dunno it was a goddamn confusing, annoying mess. I guess I'm done moving Documents folder, which kinda sucks, but like I said I guess it's not the end of the world. I think what I'll do is just continue to store important stuff on OneDrive and that way I'm safe if my computer shits the bed. Then all that'll be in that Documents folder is like folders when games and apps are installed and whatnot.

That seems incredibly wasteful... and counter-productive. Climate change ruining your business? Just contribute more emissions!

That said, this winter has been terrible. I've only gone snowboarding about four times, when in previous years this was closer to 25-30. Just about every single snowfall we've had has either been a slushy mess or immediately followed by rain and warm temps, or both.

I was scratching crap off my phone and inadvertently gave someone’s post a like. Their post was okay but the person is probably thinking, “I got a like for that?”

I needed something in the shed so I snow shoed to it and dug out the entrance and got what I needed. Figured while I'm there I should remove a few months worth of snow off the solar panels since I have not done it in a while. I gave up on that since it's just too much work, and the freezing rain and other similar garbage weather screws them up anyway. Well turns out because of all the weird weather we've had so far the snow is too hard now and I can't even remove any of it. Now I'm worried it might be too much weight on them in spring when it starts to melt and that they get damaged. I really need to figure out a solution to automate the snow removal, and also to deal with when there's freezing rain. I will tilt them more next summer, hopefully that at least helps.
There are heated wires that are used mainly for melting snow on a roof to prevent ice damns. But there's no reason you couldn't use something like that on your panels. The wire is on the thick side so it will obscure some of the panel surface area but that's better than getting no power at all.

I don'tknow what the output of your panels is but about 30 ft of wire should be around 1500 watts. That's just a guestimate though.

I used to get laid. A long time ago. (Dont laugh, I wasnt always like this)

Found an old stash of junk from back in the day. The ID Glide lube expired a LONG time ago and when I popped open the cap it stunk like Lucifers butthole. Almost made me puke. Tossed that in a plastic bag, shoved it in the garbage, took the garbage to the street. Pickup is Monday.

The Trojan Supras were even worse. Opened one wrapper. It looked like it had been thru hell and back. Smelled awful. Into the trash they all went. Probably a hundred bucks worth of lubricant and premium condoms.
Was also a grim reminder I dont get laid anymore.

Just checked. Trojan Supras have not been manufactured for a very long time. And the Bareskins are apparently not popular and dont sell all that great.

Could also try salt socks.

May not be super effective or allow the panels to continue to work, might have to experiment with that one.
