My new, improved verizon DVR won't let me switch between live TV (think sports) and a DVR'ed program using the "last" button, like my old one would! The rep I talked to back in March told me that they're working on it.

Work harder!

Additionally, my newer, super-improved DVR/box started lagging like hell when executing any command. Thao (based on Long Beach) told me that they're aware, and that re-booting the box would at least temp solve the problem. Would I like to re-boot it myself, or have them do it?

I chose for them to do it. Ok, she said, go to your DVR/box and unplug it. Wait, I thought you said . . . oh, never mind.

The reboot kept hanging. After consultation with "Rich", she directed me to re-boot my router. That didn't work either. After almost an hour of this nonsense, she gave up and said she'd have to send a tech out.

NOooooooo! I wasn't going to wait for a tech to come out next Tuesday.

I insisted she put Rich on the line directly. Instead, she got a supervisor. Somehow, the supe initiated a re-boot that finally worked. I asked him if he had done anything different than Thao/Rich's protocol. He said no.

An hour and twenty minutes later, my first world ordeal was mercifully over. On the bright side, the lagging is less . . . for now.

A fun thing to do when a co-worker brings a child to work is say "legally, I'm not supposed to be within... you know what, never mind."

You could have just zipped up and "refrained" for 120 consecutive minutes, you know.

I don't care what noted medical expert, aging TV ingenue, and stupor model Jenny McCarthy says, self-stimulation is not the productivity enhancement she claims it is. :colbert:

I'm assuming she was inside your office with you?

Well, having to put my pants back on was the worst part, but I'm over it now.

I'm pawning stuff on Craigslist and remembering exactly why I gave up on it for two years: flaky flaky flaky flaky flaky flaky.

Not wanting to be a dick -- because Jesus will know? -- I am trying to sell stuff on a first come, first served basis, but people keep going no contact on me after asking for the things. Makes me want to try eBay for the first time ever.

Sometimes I get a drink from the office vending machine when I have too many coins. So I put a dollar coin and a dime to get a diet coke. It wasn't in stock (no, it doesn't tell you this until you've put enough money). I didn't care about other drinks, so I asked for coin return. It gave me back 4 quarters and 2 nickels, son of a motherf***

Bought a sauce pan thinking it would be made in Canada... Nope, made in China. No wonder it was $20 cheaper while being identical on the surface. Why did I expect otherwise when I found it at Wal-Mart?

Stupid-ass Pan Am Games started today, whatever those are, and now the city is extra busy.

Keep in mind that foreign visitors often have vastly different cultural norms. It's summer in sunny, tropical Canuckistan, I know, but take one for the home team and keep your pants on going home.

Pfft, they are way more naked than I am, if that's possible.

I'm too lazy to take the elevator downstairs and get my Kingsman disc from Netflix, so I'll be watching Expendables 3 streaming from Amazon Prime instead.

The AC unit in my place is still working ok but it is leaking water so I have to get a bucket under the unit (the unit is in a closet of my place) and wait until the maint. guy shows up tomorrow or Monday.

The only time my mechanic was available tomorrow was 730am, so I have to get up early on Saturday to bring my car in

Can't figure out where the "What are you drinking tonight" thread is in Off Topic.

Might have something to do with the fact that I tossed back 3 12-oz bottles of Deschutes Black Butte earlier tonight.

(Still have 3 more bottles left out of the 6-pack I scored.)

(Slightly tipsy right now...)

Someone mind posting a link to that thread for me?

I'm on my phone typing up first world problem, switch tabs to upload a photo, and lose all the crap I typed up :^|

FWP meta edition

tl;dr
work sucks, tech sucks, and I'm tired of being a pack mule.

I'm in Tapatalk right now and if I follow a link in another app and switch back it reloads and I lose my progress. Happens 10x a day or more.

This happens CONSTANTLY in iOS for two reasons:
Only 1GB of RAM that needs to be aggressively reclaimed for other apps
Doesn't enforce app design guidelines so they'll suspend/restore current states

iOS on 64bit devices requires more memory than on 32bit devices, so an iPhone 5 is more useable with more available memory than everything they've made since. It's infuriating on an iPhone 6 Plus because it exacerbates the problem with 1080p. It's probably even worse on their 64bit tablets except for the latest Air (2GB).

Some f-wit know-it-all keeps moving an LCD TV so it's directly overtop (<1 cm of clearance) a passively cooled cable box. I moved it back 3 inches to give the box room to breathe, fucking idiot moved it back over. His reasoning is that the TV's too far back -- yes, because 3" makes a big difference when you're sitting 10' away. Meanwhile, on 24/7/365 cable box with a surface temp of 40-60 C and internal of 70+ C (measured it with an infrared cam) gets to bake the TV and vice versa.

Everyone resents you for buying that IR cam.

Was working on my solar power pack project, but time goes by too fast, I just realized there's no way I'll get the microcontroller part working by next week when I go camping, so opted to skip that and wire it all in directly. Ran into all sorts of issues connecting, just with physical access to the power plugs and so on as it was overall a terribly quickly thrown together design, so I ended up wasting a shit ton of time on that and having to disassemble the whole thing (basically a box with 12v outlets on it) so I can solder it in. Finally get it working, end up finding out despite triple checking polarity that I had it reversed. Blew my inverter AND my USB charger.... so much for using 120v items or charging my phone while camping. Well I could buy another inverter, but the USB charger, not so much. Not something you'd find locally, I waited like 3 months for that from Amazon.

Guess I don't need my phone camping anyway. :p Just figured it would be nice if I don't want to lug my DSLR somewhere I can still take pictures. I'll still have the 12v lights I can use but that's about all this system will be for now. Might try to see if a powered cooler will run off it too.

You can get a solar phone charger from HarborFreight for ~$20.

I have Addison-Schumpfley's syndrome. I don't ever bring it up with co-workers, because I don't want to be constantly asked about it.

A-S syndrome is not well known, but it's basic traits include, but are not limited to, an oversized sexual organ, a genius IQ, and a tendency to lie. I keep the fact that I'm an undercover operative for the CIA a secret.

Some sufferers will tell you that the extreme pheromonic enhancement which causes the most desirable women to literally follow them home is AS's most problematic symptom, but for me, it's the fixed focal length of my eye lenses.

No one in my office knows, but the TV in our cubicle farm was put there by the CIA to communicate with me through fleeting and all but unnoticeable visual codes. My problem is that said TV must be exactly 9' 9" from where I sit, or I can't focus.

All was ok until this new guy was hired. It's not his extreme halitosis or constant drool that I mind, really, it's not. But he keeps moving the TV just out of focus for me. After some bureaucratic back and forth, Langley has given me the go ahead to terminate him with extreme prejudice.

Yesterday he even stole my sandwich from the break room fridge. I intend to make his death slow and painful. He spends most of the day zoning out and neffing on some poorly and arbitrarily moderated internet tech site. He'll never know what's coming. :ninja:
