What fans do I need to buy?

Well, I'm getting a E6320 and a 8800 640MB. Plan on overclocking the processor, most definitely.

Now, never built before, how many fans do I need? What do I need to cool my PC with?

Also, Do you put a fan on a CPU, or heatsink? How does this all work? ( 0__0 )

It depends on how well you know your aerodynamics! 😛

what case you gonna get? That determines ALOT. For example a super lanboy can hold 2 120MM fans, but a P180 can hold 3. This is just on the case then you need a fan on the heatsink of your CPU and your PSU has a fan, some ppl even put a fan or 2 on the mobo heatsinks by the northbridge and I put fans on my memory.

Then you decide if you want performance or quiet fans..or you get a fan controller and speed them up or slow them down based on usage.

Alot to sift through...decide what case you want and then go from there. For your CPU get either a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme with a good 120MM fan or a Tuniq Tower Ultra 120 (this comes with a fan). Those are the top 2 heatsinks right now for overclockers that are working on Air.

P.S. Good fan = Yate Loon (super duper quiet and pushes a good amount of air).

What type of case and motherboard are you using? Does the case already have some fans installed?

How averse are you to noise? Airflow generally means noise, so there is a trade-off.

Have you already purchased an aftermarket Heatsink ? If not, you need to decide which Heatsink you want to run. Generally, the nicer units have multiple heat pipes and can run anywhere from $25-$75 with most of the $40-$60 pretty close in performance.

I looked at the Thermalright 120 Ultra, but people say that thing bends your mobo, so I'm unsure. What do I need to put on the CPU, GPU, Northbridge, memory?

The Ultra 120 has braces installed under the mobo for support...bend the mobo? The tolerances of the motherboard PCB are pretty high all things considered.

You mean the Thermalright or the Toniq Tower?

2 questions:
what is Lapped IHS in your profile.
I can overclock that E6320 with some sort of software to reach 3+ Ghz?

Both the Thermalright and Tuniq tower attach to a mobo in much the same way, there is some sort of brace.

Lapped IHS means I sanded the top cover on my CPU to expose the pure copper portion. The top layer of a CPU IHS is silver in color and is a nickle plating. Sanding this portion off and using really fine sandpaper in increments to create a mirror shine gives better contact on the heatsink base. It also has the added benefit of making sure it's 100% flat and doesn't have any air bubbles between the contact surfaces. You void your warranty when you do this and you can make your CPU run hotter than it did prior to your mod if you are not sure of what you're doing. I suggest you do not do this.

You usually overclock through your motherboard's BIOS settings. You change the CPU multiplier, FSB clock frequency, and voltages on the mobo and the CPU socket. These functions through your BIOS software prior to boot up allow overclocking. I never use Software overclocking through windows, but some people have mild success doing so.

Thank you, that makes it a whole lot clearer to all this voltage and overlclocking talk.

For my case (overclocking), which do you recommend:

TR Ultra 120
TR Ultra 120 EXTREME
or something else?

And I can't seem to find a fan that goes (under?) the heatsink

wow...waiiiitttt:

The CPU comes with a fan and heatsink? Are they good for overclocking?

The GPU already HAS a cooling thing on it, doesn't it? Do I even need anything (overclocking) for the GPU (8800)?

Stock CPU cooler is not good for overclocking. You WILL get a new one if you plan on OCing. I do not recommend that a first-timer overclock by oneself. It is a warranty-voiding process and if you push the CPU too high, your computer may not boot into BIOS. You can also melt the chip...which is uh....not fun. It's up to you how much you want to OC. If you want to push as much as possible, get a Thermalright Ultra 120/Extreme.
The GPU does indeed have cooling already installed. If you have cash to blow, get a Thermalright HR-03 Plus for the 8800. A Zalman VF900 Cu should also do fine.

You do not need to get those 80mm fans. Those are a waste of money because you have nowhere to put them inside the case. I also would not recommend that case. It will be a b1tch to get replacements for the front fan if the bearings ever die. The novelty factor will also fade very quickly with that type of case (cases should be simple and easy to look at...never something that makes people ask "So what's that?").

Big cases are the fail. They become a pain to carry if you're going to lan parties and whatnot. It's worse if you have to move it between dorm and house....

Give me a price range and we'll find you a case that should fit your demands. Otherwise, I'm going to have to go with Zepper's recommendations: Rosewill with 120mm fans. He should be here shortly with detailed descriptions.

You have actually done very well with the CPU and GPU. The case.. I dont really think that is the best you could do with a $100 budget. Secondly, you need to be considering a Power Supply, or PSU. The current best bang for buck PSU's are the Enhance 5150GH 500 watt PSU and the Corsair HX520 520 watt PSU. The Corsair is the slightly better unit but both will serve you more then adequately.

For the case, how bout an Antec Nine Hundred?

If you get the case and decide you'd like some more quietness, consider purchasing some Blue LED Yate Loon 120mm fans from Jab-tech. Though you may be just as happy with the fans that come with the case. Just give it a try first. Those 80mm fans aren't necessary. They are cheap, noisy, and won't even fit in your case 😛 Always look for 120mm fans for cases. 80mm is high noise and low airflow, while 250mm fans are also good but also have a tendency to build dead spots in poorly designed cases.

Additionally, go for the Ultra 120 Extreme if you have the money for it, Purchase a good ball bearing fan to go with it. I'll admit I'm not into quietness like the guys over at SPCR (Silent PC Review). I prefer function and overclockability to silence. For that reason I prefer the Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F fans. The CFM necessary with good overall quietness.

Oh, and on behalf of everyone here, let me say welcome to the forums ^_^

EDIT: Since Zepper hasn't checked in yet.. (Shame on him, he must be sleeping in 😉), I'll give the recommended case on his behalf.

With a solid build, a 120mm intake and exhaust, and even a side duct (though useless for tower sinks) this case provides some great bang for the buck.

OK In that big ass case, there are two intakes and no installed exhaust fans. It looks like there is a single 120mm fan slot at rear for an exhaust. Considering you have 2-250mm intakes, you will need a really high CFM 120mm fan to install as an exhaust.

As for what CPU cooler to use, look around for a review of the top coolers. Most of the $40-$60 heat-pipe coolers are really close in performance with the Ultra-120, Ultra-120extreme, and Tuniq Tower being 3 of the best.

If you are willing to go with a different case, check out the Lian Li PC-7B. It is about $90 and comes with 2-120mm fans. If you want to spend a bit more, maybe check out the Thermaltake Armor series. Lots of space and fans available in the Armor.

Do people still do lanparties? :Q

Been much too long since I've heard of a BYOB lan party.

Personally I like a big case like the Antec P180 because it has room to work in. I do not like a cramped case.
