What exactly is "trance" music?

Everyone keeps talkin about Paul Oakenfold: Tranceport but have any of you checked out Paul Oakenfold: Another World? It's a 2 CD set and well worth whatever the cost is. Favorite track has got to be Jan Johnston - Flesh (Tilt Mix), it takes me to another level.

I just mentioned Perfecto Presents Another world, Gizmo

Yea, Jan Johnston is featured on BTs Movement In Still life

I just have to giggle when reading this through...as I'm reading it through the eyes of an up and coming progressive trance musician. I love to see people getting introduced to this style that is ever so fast leaking into the mainstream. The terminology for describing today's techno and dance is just so out of hand as genre's can overlap in almost any way. But for categorizing purposes, the basic genres you have are techno, trance, progressive trance, goa, acid, jungle, break, detroit house, euro house, club house, nyc house, drum'n bass, progressive house, berlin house, fusion, retro and many more...all of these can be considered dance...why?...simply because you can dance easily to all of them. I'm not much of a dancer...I'm just the guy that's making those tracks for you hopefully one day to enjoy the night or get you through the day, or just provide some background beat that gets you into a "trance" where you often start thinking about your personal life(at least I do). Like when I drive and have some "bedrock" going, I'm just gone...often have close calls with other drivers 🙂. Then I throw in some LSG or Groovezone, and I'm all of a sudden driving 100 with white fisted knuckles...pumping mad. That's what is so great about techno/trance...you can get so many feelings out of it. It's almost taken me completely away from rock/alternative/and the rest of mainstream music because it feeds me everything i need. It's so addicting. I've considered taking my radio out of the car, and just have a nice cd player.

As for myself, I'm big into the progressive trance I guess. My tracks have a tendency to start out real mellow, gradually build up to a apperitive climax, and then back down, and the back up and down several times (real gentle) and then when I have the listener's attention, I bring it up real high and get it crazy pumping...they hit there climax as does the song, and then it gradually calms down, letting you rest (alot like sex hey?). Sex and trance are a lot alike...just go to a club or rave, and get it going with your girl or guy and you'll be very "aroused" spiritually, musically, and of course physically.

Also, you have to realize that artists such as paul oakenfold, john digweed, sasha, nick warren, danny tenaglia, pvd, dave seaman, dj dan, etc etc are for the most part just dj's...hence a lot the music they spin in those hot steamy clubs are the works of other individual artists. Dj's such as sasha and pvd, however, have personnally produced some of the hottest hits to ever hit the scene (ex PVD - For an Angel(Ewerk mix) is probably going to be a top 10 favorite forever...its so simple yet so amazing...and there is nothing like hearing him spin it right in front of you...damn it's an experience...as well as Sasha's "expander&quot😉. For the most part you have to credit the individual artists that produce such beautiful work, and you have to commend talented dj's such as those mentioned above for their incredible taste and ability to provide those seamless sessions.

Well, its getting late...so i guess it's time to head out now when the night is young. Later dudes.

Yea, I've noticed that Paul Oakenfold has a lot of remixes that other Dj's do...I think he's done a lot of DJ Tiesto. But anyways....where can we hear some of your stuff?

erikaksaz: "crap"? You are being a close minded fool. You have no idea what is out and about in this music genre...you're an idiot for making such a comment. Could you name any artists that you've actually taken the time to listen to? Get lost.

yeah, why are you in this thread? People here are talkin about music they like. No one is claiming to be king of the rave scene.

IM not sure what theyd be considered, but check out

Airscape

and

DJ Tiesto

for house gotta go with DJ Irene. there are very few house dj's that are at her level, she just doesnt get a whole lotta run.

As for Raves Ive been to at least 30-40 and ive co-hosted a couple. had to slow down after my daughter was born.

Heres a link to a site that gives a description of the kind of music these DJs spin.

interesting thread ....

i must say to mosdef.....

how much of it have you heard, and did you hear all GENRES, and have u ever heard it thru a good sound system?? i can agree that it is somewhat repetitive but u have to take into account that it is dance music.

I can't tolerate anyone disrespecting drum n'bass,or any other genre within electronica. you could have kept it to yourself, but being narrow-minded you must blurt crap like that out loud. I do not like certain types of music genres, but i don't go telling everyone out of respect.

u can't see any meaning in electronica music cuz u dont know it...idiot. really you don't understand it, and if you want to know, i will tell you what it means to me, and maybe u can learn a thing or two.

so in conclusion, i think your slightly ignorant, and i am flaming you b/c your explanation was too wack and very very typical. let me suggest something to u. listen to 3000 drum n' bass tracks, mixes, all the different sub-styles within it(neurofunk,techstep,oldsckool,jump-up,intelligent,ragga) and then come to me and say it has no merit. I'm guessin uve heard 1 or 2 tracks or maybe none at all. im confident in what i listen to, and it seems u dont have enough experience with it to judge it that way.

I'm sure ur a cool guy but just think of what your saying before u say it. everything i said applies to all those other ignorant people who say crap about something w/o even trying it. what do you listen to anyways?

In order to call it trance it has to have at least 120 beats per second other it would be techno.

"No one puts trance in the corner!" 🙂 Yeah, lame, I know, but trance rulez so much that it must stay on top 🙂

I strongly disagree with some of the songs recommended here.

Oakey, ATB, Paul van Dyk and all the 1000's of lame DJ's out there making remixes is not trance, it's pop with a scent of trance, that's how I feel. Real trance is not with a lot of deep rythms, bass that makes you move, and definitely no female vocals or any of those high-pitched noises used by Paul van Dyk......true trance freaks (not that I am one, just defending the genre) will quickly set you in place if you ask them what real trance is 🙂 Most tracks are also very long, which I think is cool.

here's a couple of songs a good friend of mine has made.....some of the tracks are really awesome (legal, from mp3.com - sorry, one of them can only be streamed but the rest are download links)

Intimidation

Twisted Fairytale

Scratches and Poodles

Penetrating Light
