I have an FM2+ board I was thinking of upgrading the CPU. Discovered the 880k to be the best it can support. Then I realized...it is nowhere to be found.

Did it just never hit the market in mass numbers? Manufacturing issues?

It's ridiculous how much the old FM2+ APUs cost. How important is CPU performance here?

edit: talking eBay prices.
From OP's 6420k (single module Piledriver) to whatever dual module Kaveri / Kaveri Refresh / Carrizo OP is looking for (I guess 7860k). It's quite massive performance uplift for a FreeNAS box.

Oof yeah. Still.

Anyway OP doesn't need to obsess over an Athlon. He can do just as well with something like a 7700k or 7850k. Actually a 7870k would be ideal, but they're all shipping out of China and they still cost like $80.

I would get an old 7700k and be done with it. I had one, they overclock pretty well if necessary.

edit: or an athlon x4 845. Those are actually pretty cheap on eBay.

Wait, is there a locked version? Because I don't remember any non-K part of 7860.
Oh not the 7860. But there are a few processors on my list of compatible CPUs that are locked and have very similar performance like the A10-8750b and at half the price. Of course it is half the price. It is locked.

It is a homemade nas running FreeNas. My CPU hits 50% load transferring files to it (which is not very often) but only 15% copying from it. I mean it is not terrible, but I might be installing a few addons which I don't know how it will hit performance yet.

The unlocked 7860 around $90 from the US.
The locked A10-8750b which performs about the same about $50 also from the US.

I'd like to stay around 65w. The 7700k and the 7850k are 95w. The 845 is about $45 from china, but I need the integrated gpu. I only have 1 pcie slot which I will be using for an m.2 adapter card.

I see. b APUs are intended to business environment. I believe it also has ECC support but I can be wrong.

You can undervolt a 7700k a bit. The newer Godavari chips like the 7870k undervolt better. Actually a 7670k would be ideal, but good luck finding one of those!

Also, Kaveri'Godavari's TDP includes the GPU. If you aren't going to be using the GPU for anything but 2d display, you can probably keep power usage down.

Bummer. See if you can find an A8-7670k.

edit: you might find someone with old FM2+ APUs for sale on OCN, not that i'm endorsing anyone specific over there. There was a fairly strong FM2+ owner/user base there years ago.
