I drink when I go to the bar or when I go to a party. Why? So I have fun. It's awesome when your inhibitions go out the window. There doesn't seem to be any other reason to drink (for me at least). I don't have a bad life, so I don't ever need to '"escape" from reality. I drink to have fun.

As for drugs, thats something I almost never do. The only drug I've ever used is weed (well alcohol is a drug too, but nobody seems to include it in subjects like these because its a legal drug). Anyway, I haven't had any weed for over a month now. The only time I smoke it is when I go to someone's party and they are passing a joint around or something.

hehe - my answer to that old chestnut is: "the glass is twice as big as it needs to be" :)

<< I'm just curious because I've NEVER had the urge to do either because of an incident that happened while I was young. I'm not judging or saying its wrong but I'd like to know the motivation behind it,if any. Thanks!

>>

Same with me. I just never had any desire or urge to use drugs or alcohol.

In fact, I think I probably wouldn't like drugs at all since I once had 3 wisdom tooths pulled out and the doctor perscribe some drugs which made me feel really nausuous. I remember thinking "if this is what feeling high is like, then I have no interests in getting high".

I sometimes wish there was something that I could take to reduce my social anxiety so I could be more social though...

I drink because it tastes good. As a matter of fact, I don't really like being drunk. I don't mind getting a little buzzed but once it goes beyond the early stages I get tired of it quick and just want to go to sleep. If I could drink beer gin and whisky all day without keeling over, I probably would.

I find the following to be well-worth drinking:

Tanqueray Vodka (betcha didn't know they made vodka, didja?)
Bombay Sapphire Gin
Absolut Citron/Pepar
Any single malt Scotch or Canadian whisky, and some american bourbon/rye. Some blended scotches have redeeming qualities for the cost.
SoCo
Fine tequila with sangrita (reposado baby)
Porto
Metaxa
Amaretto
Kahlua
Absinthe (Absente, since the real stuff is illegal the world-over)
Good wine.

Yummmm.......

That's pretty harsh. Could you tell us how to live lives full of meaning?

I still drink beer, but it's because I really, really like the taste of it.

you, my friend, are nuts. next thing you're going to tell us is that you like martinis, right?

Hey I LIKE the taste of martini and other vermouths. But I won't drink it while out - beer is my tipple while on the raz. I find drinking spirits while out is too quick to knock me for six. Beer is a more measured approach. Although I don't bother with the <5% lagers - they taste too watery and bloating.

Liquid courage man....you would be surpised how a little alcohol will give you the courage to talk to a someone you wouldve never approached sober.

my dislike of reality and the world we have created.... i can only bear it so long before i have to totally forget about it to avoid a nervous breakdown involving clock towers and deer rifles..... I need a different job, I'm definitely not a people person, and have no business as an end user support tech.... I let everything get to me, and have problems leaving work at work.

Thats probably my main reason.. second is just to have fun with my friends. I don't need an escape or anything, i just like having fun. Is that so much to ask?

drugs and alcohol. initially for everyone i believe it is the curiosity. Then continuation of said activities would be just on either social pressures (bars etc.) and peer pressure as well.

As mentioned above, depressed ppl also seek escape. These are the ones more likely to become dependent. And therefore the reason they continue is because of dependance.

I drink for pleasure. I like the taste of beer, mixed drinks (Long Island Ice Tea, Mai Tai, Martinis, etc). I used drugs because I enjoyed it. It was an experience. But then again, that could have been considered a prolonged experimental/curiousity phase. I am not against drug/alcohol use if its done in moderation and not while seeking escape from issues.

Hey, I like beer! I like how most of them taste, and I enjoy trying new ones. 3 of ?em give me a good social buzz and 6 in one night are enough to make me really toasty..

I simply can't handle shots (ugh :disgust: ), and too many mixed drinks turn me into a slobbering idiot, fast. Slobbering idiots are not appealing.

<< Mary jane is a good way to tap into your musical abilities. It definitely helps connect more to the right side of the brain and less of the left. It just seems as though the music flows out more naturally than when in a normal state of mind. Alcohol can have the same effect, but it also impairs motor skills a lot more, which causes more mistakes. >>

That's the excuse all the muscians use, lol! Pot also impairs motor skills. Its the alcohol equivalent of saying "I drive better when drunk." Its only a perception that you have because you're high. Really, I thought the same thing when I played guitar. Its not true, but if you think it is, because your perception is a bit altered when high, well then you will be a believer.

I'm not disagreeing with you tcsenter, but you'd need an outside arbiter to determine the end results I suppose.

Are there REALLY people who truly believe they drive better when drunk?! <shakes head in sorrow>

I had a friend who claimed to play basketball better when he was high, and by all opinions it seemed that he did. There reason was, he was high so much when he played basketball that it became his "norm", and he couldn't find his 'groove' when sober. That's not a good sign.
