I hear bulldogs can have a lot of health problems though. Do Danes have any health problems as well?

Seriously, just get one of the following:

1) If you want a purebred puppy, get a lab.

2) If you want a rescue, get a lab-mix.

My condo is 1000 sq ft...that's really not that small in my eyes. What type of health problems?

You asked for a medium sized dog and are now considering one of the absolute largest breeds?

Many of the same health problems large dogs tend to have. Google it if you want all the specifics.

Well size shouldn't matter it should be based on personality and how it fits into your family and life style. A lot of the medium sized dogs tend to be more crazy and more work than the bigger ones.

Apartment or Condo..... Cat for sure

My ex insisted on a dog when we moved in together, I was hell bent against it... It was an enormous hassle.

A house with a yard.. Dog is no problem.

That being said, I still would not get one of those dumb little rat type dogs despite being in a highrise condo... I'd still get a bigger more dog-like dog if I had the choice. Something like a Dane. Cause they are effing awesome dogs.

A great dane would be way too big for a condo. And yes, they are prone to health problems.

no, they aren't too big for a condo.

they're amazing apartment dogs. they don't need a bunch of space, which is contrary to popular belief. they're huge lap dogs and the most lovable beasts on the planet.

the same goes for neapolitan mastiffs.

great danes like to bark. neapolitan mastiffs don't. both were bred to be guard dogs, however neapolitan mastiffs were bred not to bark unless there was an intruder and the masters needed to be alerted. they're both ridiculously protective of their families.

both are EXTREMELY loyal to their owners, especially the children of the owners. i run around the house and chase the kids and the dane will try and stop me from chasing the kids, just in case i actually was trying to hurt them.

I have yet to try them all but I love a good fried german shepard. Some grilled beagle is nice too. Oh and don't forget the sweet and sour pug! Personally, pick the one you think tastes best for you.

Do you have a special drool sponge for the mastiff?

not yet. we've been advised to keep a drool towel handy around the house, but so far it's not necessary... he doesn't drool any worse than the dane unless they're outside running at the park.

but, then again, he's only about 6.5 months old.

my hangup with shelter dogs is that it seems like such a crapshoot in terms of personality/disposition and even how big they might grow to, as opposed to dogs that have been specifically bred for certain personalities and sizes.

we got our cane corso mastiff from the humane society... we had to end up rehoming him because he wouldn't stop chewing on all my girlfriend's things and destroying expensive stuff.

the irony is that he's at his new home and he doesn't chew stuff up anymore. it wasn't a puppy phase thing, either... i'm pretty sure it was an anxiety issue, whether it was because he was left alone at home during the day or because there was another dog in the house and he wasn't the main dog... at his new home, he's the only dog and the owner's always at home because she runs a business out of her basement.

If it's your girlfriends idea, put your foot down now. NO DOG. If she cries, dump the bitch. If she agrees with no problems, keep her. And maybe get a dog.

Sorry, I just have a feeling that this is not your idea and that she has your balls in a jar.

It is a crap shoot with any dog you get.
Find a year + old dog at the pound that is already housed trained and grown into it's personality. Puppies are cute but they are a huge PITA.
