What does "we are a proud people" mean?

I hear this a lot - "We are a proud people." I especially hear it from minorities. I hear natives say it quite often. What the hell does that even mean? I have never heard of a group of people who aren't proud. I've never heard someone say "Yeah, my heritage is X, but we really are quite ashamed and wish we were Y."

What the fuck does it mean, and why do people say it?

Maybe it means they have pride in their culture? Their history, their language, accomplishments, leaders, advancements, etc?
 
Means their people havent come up with a better phrase to describe themselves so they're just going with the stock one.

Those people suck 🙁
 
Herd/group mentality

People like to put themselves into a group to make themselves feel better.

Color.......race.......country of origin......

At the end of the day we are all people that live on planet earth. Colors,races and borders are all made up human things.

It means "we have no actual accomplishments to point to," so being a proud people has to suffice.

Not terribly worried about it - just wondering what it actually means. lol @ the conclusions ATOT jumps to.

That is my point. Who doesn't have pride in their culture, history, language, etc? Groups of people are generally proud of those things. Point me to a group of people who are not a "proud people." When I hear it all it does is serve as a reminder that those people do not think they are the same as I am.
 
I recommend using "my people" in every day conversation. I find it entertaining.

"My people don't like spicy food."

"My people don't like romantic movies. We prefer something with explosions."

"Failing to provide regular bjs is an insult to my people."


That way if they don't do what you want, they're a fucking racist. Playing the race card is fun for everyone.

There's a lot of subtext in that statement. It feels a bit defensive, as though there might be some negative aspects of that culture that might not be so worthy of pride, and the speaker is aware of that.
 
By hear this a lot I assume you're probably referencing ads and/or entertainment? I've literally never heard anyone say that ever without it being some ad for a company looking to specifically exploit said people or in a non comedic/joking fashion.

It means "We're not a white male, so therefore we are going to make this retarded statement to think we are special. In reality, we're sad pieces of shit that can't live life daily without telling ourselves that we're super dooper special."
