Placebo?...

It hurts like crazy when someone scratches your back with the quarters (my family applies it very hard, really bad...) until your back turns red... Does it really do anything?...

Googled it:

Flu, Fever, Colds or just not feeling so good-
Take Vick's vapor rub or tiger balm, rub it on your back. Then take a quarter or the metal lid from the container and have someone rub your back with it. Rub it up and down (vertically) until your back is very red or black and blue-Im really serious.
I know this sounds wierd. But this is an ancient Chinese remedy. My mom used to do this to me and my sisters ( & had us to do it to her) and we always felt better. Ive introduced it to my husband when he had a flu and he felt better the next day. The Vicks vapor rub just makes you feel better and there is just something that the coin does, too. I know that the coin massages your muscle tissues very well but it does something else mysteriously miraculous.
Just be careful...here in America, they will think you are being abused. :)

Or quarters. Ancient Chinese money had holes in the middle, so I'm not sure how well that would work..

And as far as rubbing the back with them until it is sore, WTF. I'd think it would cause more problems. What's wrong with just putting the vaporub on like you are supposed to???

Some traditions seem to make sense - when I'm sick my mom used to give me this very spicy indian soup. That made sense... Coins rubbed on one's back doesn't quite make sense to me. And, well, Vick's Vapor Rub is supposed to make you feel good, so I guess it's working, Chinese Medicine Magic or not...

I just hate how the OP assumed that everyone would know his stupid traditions - why not include a little description so us non-chinese could know what the hell you're talking about?

I was going to say quarters but then thought any large coin would do for the desecration of the victim's back. Didn't know about the holes.

Sounds like this should be on MythBusters, just because I want to see the red head's naked back... Yum...

Sorry, my hispanic friends do that all the time - mention some esoteric thing from their culture matter of factly, assuming that I know everything there is to know about their strange customs.

How does that make any sense? Seems just a moronic as the coin thing.

Why? We are all supposed to know about Chinese traditions?

I mean people are stupid for using these moronic folk remedies. I'd never heard of this one before this thread.

Doctors always recommend plenty of liquids.. Soup is a liquid...

It doesn't cure you, but fluid intake is important...

That's retarded. If I drink loads of beer next time I have the flu, will I get better?

Oh, shut the hell up. It's a FACT that fluid intake, not ALCOHOL intake, is a good thing when you have a cold. Warm liquid also helps with plhem build up.

Please, don't argue for the sake of arguing.

I'm not arguing for the sake of it. I'm arguing because it really is retarded to think that spicy soup will make you better.

I'm not going to argue with someone who's user name is "iamaNelephant." An elephant with terrible grammar who thinks that fluid intake isn't important and that spices can't clear your lungs/congestion is clearly an elephant not worth my time.

I guess common sense is relative.
