I see the term PC used a lot. To me it means encouraging people not to sound or behave like bigoted asses. What does it mean to you?

To me it means not having the balls to stand up for yourself. There are extremes to everything, but I really don't like PC. At a local mall, they couldn't even call the easter bunny the easter bunny, it's the holiday bunny now. I'm nowhere near being religious or even caring that much, but it's just an example of stuff taken too far. At berkley during a gathering in remembrance of 9/11 (or something related to it) students were originally going to wear red/white/blue ribbons to show support for the US. It was decided that this might be offensive to foreign students. Stuff liek this irritates me. You can keep yourself from being a bigoted ass just by being nice to people, but you're not going to please everyoen all the time.

edit: Smoothe is spelled with an e btw. :p

To me it means using the latest fancy terms and abandoning common sense out of a fear of being called a bigoted ass. For example, a news story on the radio the other day was talking about old people. But instead of calling them "elderly" they were referring to them as "older-americans." It got really annoying and I had to switch it off.

Everybody hates PC... but they're scared that if they aren't PC, they'll be attacked by thousands of middle age, upper class women.... who seem to be the ones perpetuating the PC crap. Yeah, that wasn't PC, suck it! :p

So does anyone know what I can say to be attacked by late 20's early 30's upper class women? That sounds kinda fun.

PC represents everything that's going wrong, all the lawyering up, the euphemisms (sp?) and the general babying that we as a people are doing. It is my belief that people are getting much softer, and this is NOT a good thing.

PC is supposed to mean not trying to offend anybody. But I can see from these posts that it's doing the opposite. :D

When I hear PC I hear 'stuffed suite politician' or 'moron wants you to think moron is better than you' and thats it. It really is BS.

PC means using a less offensive term when you can. I can't just go around refering to 'people of african ancestry' negroids or the more infamous n*gg*r. I'll get sued, ostrasized, beat up, killed etc. So why is being PC such a bad thing? Is going out of your way not to insult someone so hard to do?

Political Correctness is pretty much the idea that one should not utter any oppinion that goes counter to the current "norm" of liberals. It's pretty much creating a generation of pansies that think they have a right to never have to hear anything that they don't like or agree with. The media happily plays along with the PC crap, so anyone in the public eye that says anything not liked by the liberal mainstream is in for it.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with using a better term for something if such a term is available, but this notion that people have a right not to be "offended" by other people's expressions or ideas is utterly revolting and goes against all ideals of freedom of speech.

Is going out of your way not to insult someone so hard to do?

There's always going to be someone somewhere that's insulted by something. I don't go out of my way to offend someone, but I'm not about to go out of my way to make sure someone out there isn't offended either. If you're offended by something that to me is perfecly reasonable, tough sh!t. And if someone says something that offends me, that's tough to, they are entitled to their oppinion.

PC represents just one of the many things wrong with America's society. I remember the good old days when you called a spade a spade, not an "earth-turning implement", for fear that someone would get pissed off about it.

For the record, I'm an American and while I still like living here, I'm sure the writers of the Bill of Rights are spinning in their graves.

PC means behaving according to someone elses standards instead of being yourself.

I was taught in school that we each had the right to our own opinions. Somewhere we became lost in our travels thru life.

wait, wait, so you wouldnt go out of your way to bathe, wear deoderant
im sure around some circles the noxious oders emanating from your body is a comfortable and homely expression of comaraderie but you probably try to look clean and professional in places like work

that same logic should extend to what you say or do right?

now saying there will always be some people offended so you shouldn't try to be PC is as weak as those people who get offended by everything. PC was meant to be just another form of civility (right word) conduct, Polite Correctness rather than Political, at least thats how i see it.

There's a certain point where it just gets ridiculous. Everything that you do is going to offend someone, somewhere, somehow. You should try to adhere to the basic rules of a polite society, but bending over backwards to avoid the least possible slight, real or imagined, to anyone is just getting out of hand.

Political correctness is the way American corporations control you through setting social agenda.
Lobbying would be how they control you through the setting of economic agenda.
"Coolness" is how they control you through the setting of social norms.

ok then this, how many here bend over backwards at a job interview to look professional, or on a hot date (haha) trying to appear more attractive?

now if everyone excercized common sense there wouldnt be any need for PC right, just like if everyone followed the law police arent needed, well there you go, you want to live in a place without police, i havent seen that movie city of god yet but i think it has something along those lines.

Rampant political correctness is one of the few things which really pisses me off - If I say something and mean no offense then it is wrong for someone to take offense make an issue of it.
