That's what I thought. So basically, there is no real point in turnig it off and on while normal driving, just leave it on all the time, and it'll do it's thing..

overdrive is like an afterburner on a plane, which is similar to nos. its also got parts of a vtec setup. ive actually got an upgraded ecu od, ported and polished. my car is so fast with it on. yesterday i smoked a corvette, and he was all like 'oh snap i dont have overdrive thats sick yo'.

so basically, if you want to be fast and impress the chickas, keep your overdrive on.

hahaha what a joke! And afterburners are nothing like NOS, its refueled exhaust from the first burn which is then burnt again.

you dont know what the hell youre talking about. my dad is a race car driver on the nyrus circuit and my mom is a fighter jet pilot. i think i know what nos and afterburners are. n00b.

ps my moms fighter jet is the new model f27b with an upgraded direct port nitrous afterburner.

You sound like a little kid who lives in an orphanage! Good luck with life dude!

I have a button on mine for overdrive.

Is it safe turn it on while the car is moving or should I wait until I come to a complete stop before turning it on. I normally leave it off.

If you turn it off while driving, it'll just drop down to the previous gear if you're already in OD, and if you're not, it'll simply prevent the transmission from shifting up into OD.

As stated before, OD is a gear ratio higher than 1:1. Leaving a car in D as opposed to OD (or locking out OD) simply means the car won't shift up into OD. This prevents gear hunting and gives you more power to work with if you're towing something. (OD is designed for highway cruising. Low power output, but few turns of the engine to lower fuel consumption while maintaining highway speeds.)

Technically, ANY gear with a higher than 1:1 ratio is an overdrive gear, and technically, many cars have 2 or 3 overdrive ratios. (An Acura RSX 6 speed manual is an example of a car with 3 overdrive ratios.)

In most (automatic transmission) cars, it simply means 4th gear. Turning it off via the little button on the shifter (or switching the lever from OD to D or 3) means that the automatic transmission will not use 4th gear.

do not turn it off if you're going over 30.

a lot of you are saying it's great for highway cruising... but what if you're just driving around town... wouldn't the 1:1 non-OD still use up more gas ? Wouldn't OD still serve you better on local roads... where even then you don't really need the power ?

Unless you are towing something very heavy, where you need more torque, leave it on. In an overdrive automatic transmission (most commonly a four speed), the first two gears are underdrive (engine turns faster than the rear wheels), 3rd gear is 1:1 (engine turns the same as rear wheels), and 4th gear is overdrive (the engine turns less than the rear wheels). When overdrive is turned off, your car only uses the first three gears. When overdrive is turned on, it will use all four. This means at a higher speed, the engine has the ability to turn lower RPM's, using less fuel.

we have a winnar!

makes a lot more sense to me now

you guys are horrible at answering questions. 4 posts aimed at me and I still have no answer.

yes or no : Is it safe (for the car) to push the over drive button while moving in an automatic or should I come to a stop first.

in other words, If I drive on the highway non-stop for an hour and toggel the overdrive on and off like 30 times. Will I damage the car?

If you do anything too frequently, you are bound to break something - yeah, even works for sex :p I turn OD on and off while my car is in motion. I have been using it like this for the past 6 years. I get about 30-32 mpg on my 6 year old Corolla. I have driven a stick shift before and I figured I would use the overdrive button as if I were shifting into 4th or downshifting to 3rd while taking corners. Works fine for me, so far :)

Hmm... if it were really that bad, do you think they'd allow it to be engaged while the car was in motion ? There's a reason why you can't shift to Reverse without depressing the shift unlock first (meaning you really meant to do it)... every other gear (except for Park) can be shifted to without pushing the unlock first. That's cause shifting gears (4,3,2,1) while the car is in motion is ok... even if you did it accidentally.

Better performance/handling of the car, increases fuel consumption.

Listen to your dad. He knows what he's talking about. Bet he drops it down in 2nd gear when he's in 30mph traffic, also.
