What does "Over-drive" do?

It's a higher gear. Leave it on unless you are on hills and the transmission is constantly hunting for a gear.

Yup, it's just one gear higher, basically. If your engine seems to be bogging down and you can't accelerate, turn it off.

I believe it uses the motion of the car to cut down on RPM and save gas. But I am not a car-kinda guy. I just use it when I hear the engine whining after it raises and drops 2 times in my Corolla. When I ease off the gas and switch on overdrive, I hear the rpms drop once again. I also turn it off to cut speed - that allows me to approach corners faster - or so I like to think 🙂

I wish I could get an overdrive unit for my trans, sadly they only make them for the manuals.
Overdrive is over 1:1 drive ratio which is usually what the last gear is. Speaking for IHC of course, I dont know about modern tran's.

Unless you are towing something very heavy, where you need more torque, leave it on. In an overdrive automatic transmission (most commonly a four speed), the first two gears are underdrive (engine turns faster than the rear wheels), 3rd gear is 1:1 (engine turns the same as rear wheels), and 4th gear is overdrive (the engine turns less than the rear wheels). When overdrive is turned off, your car only uses the first three gears. When overdrive is turned on, it will use all four. This means at a higher speed, the engine has the ability to turn lower RPM's, using less fuel.

we have a winnar!

In an automatic you never need to turn it off. It will adjust the gears for you because it is an automatic. If you want that extra torque on the freeway then turn off. Other than that there is no reason to turn it off.

p.s. Dont turn it off

It doesen't effect the gearing before the last gear, right?..

My dad leaves it off until he gets above 45 in the Camry. I never thought about it.

overdrive ON for driving, OFF for towing..... in all vehicles

all it does is change the gearing less towards acceleration and more towards high speed and slightly lower fuel consumption (from regular drive)

and i'm pretty sure it effects all gears eli... not 100% sure though

Turn it off if you are going up hills or towing something or your tranny is gone! If your gonna be speeding like crazy leave it on.

overdrive is like an afterburner on a plane, which is similar to nos. its also got parts of a vtec setup. ive actually got an upgraded ecu od, ported and polished. my car is so fast with it on. yesterday i smoked a corvette, and he was all like 'oh snap i dont have overdrive thats sick yo'.

so basically, if you want to be fast and impress the chickas, keep your overdrive on.

hahaha what a joke! And afterburners are nothing like NOS, its refueled exhaust from the first burn which is then burnt again.

Unless you can scan your Lockheed Martin photo ID badge for us, I believe PCTweaker, because he spoke first, and referenced google.

you dont know what the hell youre talking about. my dad is a race car driver on the nyrus circuit and my mom is a fighter jet pilot. i think i know what nos and afterburners are. n00b.

ps my moms fighter jet is the new model f27b with an upgraded direct port nitrous afterburner.
