I'm not going to take sides, but technically merc is right. One night of drinking can cause death, so of course you can get mild to severe brain damage from excessive drinking. At certain BALs, a lot of fvcked up sh1t can happen to your body. I'm a bio/chem major and I know this sh1t from class, not any afterschool specials.
20 shots would kill me if I didn't recieve medical treatment in time (I weigh around 175lbs), so I'm glad Shawn's friend survived the night okay.

you specifically could survive 20 shots, if of course you had previously built up a tolerance. the same amount of alcohol can cause different BAL's based on the person's tolerance level. If you had never consumed alcohol before that date and downed 20 shots.. yea you'd probly end up with a very bad case of alcohol poisoning, if not comatose or dead. I could probly do 20 shots, but not all at once.. spread through quite a few hours.. but it would be the opposite of fun, as in huggin a toilet all night long, probly passed out on the floor in front of the toilet even. or in the hospital, who knows. im usually one to take nights easy.
btw, im about 170lbs.

Shot glasses are different sizes, but the most common size is one ounce. Bottles of liquor are different sizes too!

I'll never understand why people drink until they pass out. The best parties are memorable ones, not the kind where you wake up curled around the toilet wondering how you got there... well, more like when... it's usually obvious HOW. When I drink it's only until I've got a heavy buzz, and then I cycle water and more drinks to hold the buzz all night. I've had to take care of enough stupid sh1t-faced retards that I know better than to do that to myself. Course if they drank themselves into a body bag it would at least save me some trouble... so drink up boys!

I always thought a shot was 1 ounce. Anyway, being in university is the time in your life to go on serious alcohol binges. From staggering during your frosh years, and getting more controlled and adjusted as you get more experienced. 20 ounces doesn't seem like that much for a seasoned veteran. I can drink that that much, and I'm ~180lbs, and still be functional for the most part, although I don't do it often. Typically, I find that a good 10-12 ounces is a good predrink before the bars, and then nurse two or three drinks at the bar.
I'm drinking a lot less now (third year), but in your first and second years its how you have fun.
Slightly off topic: I remember the first time I "time travelled" (blacked out), I was 16 and was completely freaked out that it happened. As the years went on, I find that sometimes even during moderate nights of drinking, my memory can be spotty, even though I am completely functional. Is this normal?

I'm just trying to help. when I was tending you have to keep an eye out for people that have simply gone way beyond the line (you look at their eyes and speech) for their safety and the establishment's butt.
I'll be the first to admit that I can throw down with the best of them, but it is nothing to be proud of.
Just be careful. I will say that alcohol is much more enjoyable once you don't binge drink and learn to enjoy it to maintain a nice buzz throughout the night. Blacking out is indeed 2nd stage alcoholism I believe. A true blackout where you truly don't remember doing the things you did the night before.
