What does it mean to be cut off when driving?

Is it when someone merges in close in front of you? Or is it if someone merges in front of you and goes slower than you?

Is someone merging in front of you, is about half a car length away, but going 10mph faster than you cutting you off?

:hmm:

Simply, I'd say it's any (often unsignaled) maneuver into your path that forces you to suddenly slow down and/or alter your course.

That is what I would call getting "Cut Off".
Nowadays though, it seems to mean any time anyone gets in front of you, at any time, for any reason, at any speed, in any way, shape, or form.

Too many people are just looking for a reason to rage.

when that happens I change lanes if I can . It means that the person who jumped in front of you is either going to stop and turn, or something as unpleasent.

When someone slices right in front of you (especially without warning) and the only way to avoid an accident is by slamming on your brakes and praying he punches the gas.
Lately I have been less inclined to slam on the brakes. I'd like a new front bumper.

It's when you fail to keep space in front of you for merging traffic and act surprised when someone actually needs to get onto the highway even though you plainly saw a row of cars on the onramp.

i agree, everyone should follow the "zipper method" and let one car in front of them at these times.

seems lately cutting off people is the new change lanes procedure. i know some day one of these little pos econoboxes is going to change lanes in front of me at 50 when im doing 65 (the speed limit) and im not going to have enough time to slow down. it happens at least 4 times a day for me in a 18 mile freeway trip from phoenix to mesa.

when you're cruising at a reasonable rate and some asshole merges in front of you very slowly and forces you to slam on your brakes.

The person merging onto the highway is supposed to yield, not the person already moving at speed on the highway.

This might be true, but allowing someone to merge onto the highway (even in front of you!!) is called "not being an ass". People who speed up to prevent an orderly merge can diaf.

No fail. Drivers on the highway, if they kept space between each other, could continue the same rate of speed while allowing the merging traffic to enter in the spaces.

Instead, people BUNCH as they approach a merge in the hopes of "not letting the guy get in front of me" so the merging traffic is forced to cut people off and the result is a lot of people hitting their brakes. The chain reaction of people cutting off, hesitating and speeding up to "go faster" creates a nice 10 minute delay.

A lot of routine traffic slowdowns could be avoided if people kept distance and allowed merging traffic to enter. At the same time, people need to understand that they need to enter traffic smoothly at a merge and not hesistate. If both sides actually know how to fucking drive, we'd all get there much faster.

I'll add that I've tried the whole "traffic busting" technique of keeping a VERY large space in front of me and it works to unclog a lot of cars and speed things up behind me. The space allows dumbasses "trying to go faster" a chance to get out of the lane and a ton of mergers manage to get IN the lane. I often can glide past the whole ordeal without touching my brakes, merely slowing down a little in advance of the merge (taking my foot off the gas). The only sacrifice I make is not insisting on trying to "go faster than the guy trying to cut me off" and reducing my speed a tiny fraction.

The same technique allows you to get through a traffic jam at a consistent rate of speed without touching the brakes while everyone else in front of you is gunning it and then slamming to a dead stop. Smoothing out the stops is something EVERY experienced driver who likes to claim they're a good driver should do.

You would be considered "at fault" for the accident you describe there.

Of course I would. Everyone and his brother is allowed to run around acting like assholes but if I dont participate in the dangerous stupidity, then I'm the troublemaker.

Now that I think about it, it would be hard to prove that I deliberately didnt slam the brakes in time. I could easily say I just wasnt able to react quickly enough and I accidentally slammed into him.

Fuck! I really wish people would just obey the laws and think about how they drive. I wouldnt even need to dance the moral tango like this if they were law-abiding and responsible and considerate.

The problem is that you're admitting fault by saying that. You are suppose to follow at a safe distance and if you didn't have enough time to hit the breaks, you were going too fast or too close.

Still is your fault. Only way it's not your fault is to have witnesses say that the guy pull out right in front of you and slammed on his breaks.
