What does it mean to be a "man"? Are there no "real men" left?

I'm sick and tired of hearing about "being a man."

I want to post this to open a serious discussion about what is means to be a "real man."

I'll post what I think.

Many of you on these forums often harp on about having a "man card," but many of you imply many of the things you claim a "man" should enjoy or like are really things that myself and many others would consider childish. For example, I see grown, upper middle class men with probable decent jobs walking around in football jerseys and gym shorts as their weekend apparel. Is this how a real "man" would dress?

I disagree with that definition of a "man."

I think the modern man has evolved into this sort of "man child." Let me break it down into several points.

1. Dress: The modern man has evolved little in the way they dress from the time they were teenagers or kids. A trip to any suburban mall or restaurant on the weekend will indicate this.

Doesn't a "real man" dress like one? I bet many here are dressing similar or other fashion that is more for a 12 year old. How many times have you seen the "athletic deparment shirt" with shorts and a backwards hat on nearly every husky looking 28 year old? Do these people never grow up?

2. Cars: The modern man's car is vain. This trend started in the 1960s with muscle cars. Loud cars with lots of chrome with little engineering quality or technology, but with large engines and high acceleration times. The modern man doesn't car about looking classy or staying under the radar. Instead of enjoying the satisfaction of personally knowing the importance of your car, the modern man's desire is to draw as much attention as possible to their life sized HotWheels project.

The evolution of the modern pick up truck is a perfect example. Compare truck sales or compact trucks to full sized trucks today. The modern pickup truck is so tall and imposing, one would wonder how you could even load into the back of it given many of them have a nearly 4 foot ground clearance from the tail gate! A generation ago, trucks were built for work, and they were respectable. The modern day truck is an extension of the childhood fantasy of owning a "monster truck." It's not what is used to be, a tool for work.

3. Houses: The modern man has no sense of style or design. Modern houses are cookie cutter houses in cookie cutter neighborhoods often throw together with plywood, asphalt shingles, and "fantasy like" landscaping, often making the house look like something out of a design book, with no character or personal touches.

If you drive through older well off neighborhoods, you see custom designed houses of many different styles. Cape Cod, New England, Tudor, and other styles. The modern house is vain, often with cheaply made aesthetic features used to mimic grand styles, like wood pillars (to resemble stone ones). Interior, it's no different. Cheaply built furniture probably made in China and large flat screen TVs everywhere. Very few modern houses have proper offices or libraries and when they do it's usually just a "computer room" posing as an office. A office or library is a place where business gets done and intellectual pursuits are achieved.

4 Travel: The modern man is a "vacation coward." It wasn't until the last 50 years did "package vacations" arrive to the market. Before then, "men" traveled like men. And I will say, real men don't need travel agents. Rarely does it come across that a modern man is traveling to somewhere besides your common tourist trap or vacation resort.

I could go on about the personality of modern men, and even how to revel in their childishness and flaunt it, but I won't.

I will define very briefly what a "real man" should be.

I think a real man appreciates a woman for more than a piece of meat, but is attracted to their person and their style, not just the size of their chest.

Real men read books and educate themselves, not just "Maxim" or some other childish nonsense. Information and intellect are the keys to power and wealth. No one ever achieved anything in their life reading some boob magazine. Real men read poetry and classic literature. This is how it was done generations ago by real men.

Real men dress the part, with style. Proper shoes, not pair of Nikes they got on sale at Cosco. Proper shirt, collared or sweaters, made with quality. Proper suits, made by a tailor or top designer, not something you got at Men's Warehouse.

Real men don't have "small penis" syndrome when it comes to vehicles. Drive a car with understated elegance and that serves it's purpose. A sports car should be exotic, sexy, and polite yet perform when needed. And don't mix cars, this "sports sedan" crap has got to go. If you need a sedan, buy a real sedan, don't be a poser and buy a sedan marketed like a sports car because you think you're Mario Andretti on the way to work in the burbs.

Real men...well I'm tired, you get my point.

I respect everyone's opinions, but I had to get this off my chest. I'm sick of tired of seeing grown ass men act, dress, behave, and treat women like a 14 year old would. Give me your thoughts on my post and what you think a "real man" is, but I will say, there are few "real men" left.

I'd also like to link to one of my favorite poems that I think describes a "real man."

And no cliff notes, it's not a story, you have to read it, it's a opinion piece.

"In those days spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women, and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Aplha Centauri."

Whenever I hear the whole "be a man" or "man up" thing, the mental image that comes to mind is of a belligerent, uncompassionate, sexist moron. Just like in the good old days. :p
The expression seems to be typically used in scenarios where belligerence, lack of compassion, or sexism are apparently warranted, at least in the minds of those uttering said expressions.

No thanks, I'll opt out of that sort of thing.

tl;dr
cool story bro
Man Card... NOW!!!

yeah, I think that sums it up. Things like this are defined by the majority of the culture. Apparently, you are in the minority. Cool place to be... sometimes.

If you really want to know what it means to be a man, go read Iron John. And i dont mean the book .. i mean the actual Fairy Tale (altho the book was based on the fairy tale).

And what you posted.... Dress... Car... House.... describe Metro-sexuals... not real men.

Real men dont creat threads asking "lobster or crab" ... real men demand steak... rare... and potatoes.

and for god sakes... real men dont post their favorite "poem" ... /facepalm

Hugh Hefner and Larry Flint disagrees with you.

They were not readers but publishers, but I would hardly call them successful. Real men do not define success strictly in terms of dollars.

Both of them have failed personal relationships and have spent them lives in the vain pursuit of mechanical sex with women who do not care about them. This is nonsense that real men don't have time for. To "make love" and "have sex" are two different things, and I would be hard pressed to believe either of them has ever done the former. Hefner in particular is not a man, just another grown child.

you're right... being heads of empires with annual revenue of $300 million plus... hardly makes them successful.

Real men are able to provide for their woman... and at $300 million in revenue a year... both are more than capable.

You might enjoy reading some of TC Luoma's stuff (Atomic Dog).

Also, being a man, in my opinion, simply boils down to doing what is right and not asking or looking for praise because of it. it is the simple pursuit of doing right by others and yourself.

This sounds arrogant, you can't be a real man unless you have a tailored suit? While I agree a man should have 1 properly fitted suit in his wardrobe, I am not going to belittle him and think of him as less than a man if he does not, that is something a child would do.

Real men can appreciate poetry. A real man can exhibit manliness, along with a softer side.

in the bedroom, when seducing his woman... sure.

but not in public.

a real man doesn't saunter down the street spouting his favorite poem.

hell... a real man doesnt saunter.

I knew which poem it was before I clicked the link... Call it generic, but out of all of the poetry and literature I've studied, this one is a personal favorite.

without reading this thread. to pass into manhood you need too

1) get punched in the face
2) have a beer after
3) masturbate into a dr. pepper bottle.

I don't have to read the TLDR post to know you're wrong - here is what it takes to be a "man" today: Have a penis and pubes. The rest is pretentious bullshit.

What makes a man? Is is the power in his hands? Or his quest for glory? What make a man? Is it the woman in his arms? Just 'cause she has big titties? Or is it the way he fights every day? ....No, it's probably the titties.

Now you're a man!

A man, man man.
Now you're a man!

A manny manny man.
A man man man.

You are now a man.
You're a man.
Now you're a man!

The idea that there are "real men" and supposedly "fake men" is stupid. Stop trying to force others into gender roles, and stop lettings other pressure you into behavior based on your gender.

Just act the way you want to.

0/10.

How about a real man doesn't get his feathers ruffled (and then post on ATOT) by what he perceives as society's contemporary view of men?

I agree.

Considering how knotted he's gotten his own underwear over the appearance of others, it appears the OP isn't a real man.

I wonder if he still wears fitted suits when he "travels like a man."

You talk about crazy affairs
You talk about your life as though it mattered
You get attention 'cos you block the stairs
Bragging about some bottles you have shattered

Well I met a man who really lives
He really does it all
But what really matters is the heart he gives
He makes your talk seem small

When a man is a man
He doesn't act to a plan
He don't have to perform like John Wayne in some B feature flick
A man is a man
When he can offer his hand
Not afraid of appearing insane if he can't break a brick
I know a man who's a man

Can't you sometimes crack a smile
Do you think if you did we would run and tell
I know one day your big villian style
Will collapse as they turn the key in the door of your cell

I know a man who was once like you
But he opened his heart
No one is really bad right through
He's just another part

When a man is a man
And he drinks 'til he's canned
He can drop to the floor, he can weep, we won't ask the price
A man is a man
He can fall he can stand
We won't love him more if he keeps his soul on the ice
I know a man who's a man

Every one of us is looking for fame
He's a looker
He's a dresser
He's a genius under pressure
I know a man who could tighten your rein
He's a father
He's a brother
He's a rock
He's a lover

He's a man he's a man
He doesn't act to a plan
He don't have to get hitched to a train in some muscle beach trick
A man is a man
When he can offer his hand
Not afraid of appearing insane if he can't break a brick
Be a man who's a man
