What does "Hoosier" mean?

Indianans apparently call themselves Hoosiers, yet they themselves don't even know what that means according to Wikipedia. Where does that ridiculous word come from?

I don't think anybody knows where it came from for sure, just that they've been calling themselves that since the early 1800s.

I was under the impression the word "hoosier" was an insult on par with redneck, hilljack, hick, etc, anywhere outside of Indiana. I live here and have been here since I was 5, and I have no idea what the hell it means. But people here sure do like to be Hoosiers. I think it's stupid, personally.

Well, I guess they can call themselves Hoosiers if it makes them feel like they're not an anonymous state that no one ever thinks about and isn't known for anything. 😀

A corruption of the derogatory term "hoser".

Example, "You are a hoser"

and the Canadian version, "You are a hoser, eh?"

I've got a set of Hoosier slicks and a set of rain tires sitting in the shop at school. Anyone else heading to FSAE in Michigan May 14th?

They are known for having cheaper taxes, casinos, corn, bad stench, and fireworks. It is the armpit of the midwest.
