What does "Hoosier" mean?

I was under the impression the word "hoosier" was an insult on par with redneck, hilljack, hick, etc, anywhere outside of Indiana. I live here and have been here since I was 5, and I have no idea what the hell it means. But people here sure do like to be Hoosiers. I think it's stupid, personally.

Well, I guess they can call themselves Hoosiers if it makes them feel like they're not an anonymous state that no one ever thinks about and isn't known for anything.
