Indianans apparently call themselves Hoosiers, yet they themselves don't even know what that means according to Wikipedia. Where does that ridiculous word come from?

I don't think anybody knows where it came from for sure, just that they've been calling themselves that since the early 1800s.

I was under the impression the word "hoosier" was an insult on par with redneck, hilljack, hick, etc, anywhere outside of Indiana. I live here and have been here since I was 5, and I have no idea what the hell it means. But people here sure do like to be Hoosiers. I think it's stupid, personally.

Well, I guess they can call themselves Hoosiers if it makes them feel like they're not an anonymous state that no one ever thinks about and isn't known for anything. :D

A corruption of the derogatory term "hoser".

Example, "You are a hoser"

and the Canadian version, "You are a hoser, eh?"

They are known for having cheaper taxes, casinos, corn, bad stench, and fireworks. It is the armpit of the midwest.
