I don't know, Star trek the movie was pretty bad. A robot probe trying to go home and destroy the planet... Yeah..

Nah, it was a satellite that was reprogrammed and upgraded by an unknown race for an unknown reason. The satellite was headed back to its point of origin in search of input and to answer the age-old question "why am I here".

The little white balls it shot out weren't weapons, they were probes of ridiculous power sending signals back to the satellite. Kinda like oh hey what's that, I wanna touch it and BOOM. Kinda like a little kid catching a butterfly because it's beautiful and killing it in the process.
