she kept mentioning ginger as in "feeling ginger."

wtf does it mean? 😕

I get ginger = a person with red hair, but I don't grok what ginger means as a slang word for an emotion.

Ginger means the same thing in NZ as it does in USA. Ginger balls means you have ginger hair on your balls. It most definitely doesn't mean "i love you" in NZ.
