What do you think Tiger Woods bench presses??

Me and a couple of guys from the office went to the driving range on our lunch break and they were kind of surprised by how far I can hit the ball. Naturally, they were poking fun at me and calling me Tiger Woods (apparently they were ignoring all my worm burners and sweeping hook shots 😉 ) But the more I got to thinking about it, Tiger Woods' build is almost exactly what mine is like proportionally, slim but strong. And one of my buddies noticed this too since I'm lefty and always facing the opposite of everyone else (plus I had on a red shirt and dark pants today.) He's only one inch taller than me and weighs about 5-7 pounds more than me (he's supposedly around 175, I'm around 168.) We both work out regularly. We're both the same age. Naturally, there's a lot more that goes into hitting the ball long besides strength, a lot of it is flexibility and the length of the club swing (not to mention all the other mechanics.) But there's no doubt his being in shape definitely contributes to the legth of his game.

So then we got to wondering who could bench more (since there's no debating who's the better golfer 😉 ) I'm sure he's stronger, but exactly HOW strong is he? Some searches on Google mostly pulled up forum conversations and said numbers around 300+ lbs. That may be possible, I suppose if it's right at 300. I was thinking more in the 275 ballpark for somebody with our build type. I personally can only do 245, although I haven't maxed in a few months so it might be slightly higher. Just curious. Nef away.

i have read that Tiger benches something around 300+. not sure now though...the guy is a work out nut...

Just by looking at him, I'd say 225-245.

Those scrappy ones are tough to tell though.

He doesn't look it because on TV he's always wearing loose shirts. I read somewhere that when he was at Stanford he'd go and work out with the linemen from the Stanford football team and bench the same as them. I'm assuming that means he benches a lot since those guys are much bigger guys, not scrappy at all.🙂 I would guess it's over 300 since he's in even better shape now than in college (unlike the rest of us 😉).

<< how far you can drive the ball has little to do with strength... its all in the technique... >>

I know that. That's what I said up above too. It does contribute some though, although there's a lot more that goes into it. Davis Love III (and a whole host of other golfers) can rip the ball too and most of them are Joe Average in terms of strength and build. We just got to wondering how strong he really was in general. I've only seen him in person one time (from afar at one of his Tiger Woods Foundation things) and he looked to be in good shape, but not gigantic. Just very very solid.

is this thread really about Tiger Woods? Or did you want to try to find a subtle way to tell someone that you weigh 168lbs and can bench 245. ohh, and I like how you say "only 245" LOL

Technique matters most but strength has a lot to do with it - back when Tiger first made his name he went into a year long slump - he then hired a personal trainer and started working out a lot more and hired a new coach to help him analyze what's wrong with his technique. A combination of both increased strength and improved technique helped him to improve his game.

No I'm not that lame yet. 😛 There was a whole benchpressing thread a few weeks ago where we all got to chime in on that. There's plenty of guys here way stronger than me. We were really curious. Especially with the Masters coming up and one of our clients taking a few members from the agency this year. Low men on the totem pole like me probably won't get to go though :disgust:
