Another good rule - don't give your kid a family name for his first name and then call him by his middle name. My parents did that. Called me by my middle name because they didn't want people to call me Matt like my uncle. It has been a lifelong annoyance, having to explain why I go by my middle name every time someone learns my first name. And I don't even like my middle name!
Oh well, at least my mom didn't let my dad name me Darryl like he wanted to.
Oh yeah, speaking of giving your kid a name that you yourself would want to have... I think I'd really like my name to be Thor. It's such a tough sounding name. My wife refuses to name our first son that though.
