ICQ IS too bloated. At least, the new AOLized ICQ. I use ICQ98a, beta DLL 1.26 :) I will never touch ICQ2000, or AIM.

But ICQ98 rules.. ;)

Definately not me, although I'm pretty low compared to the 6xxxxxxx that new users get.. my number is 8235397.. I've been using ICQ for hmm.. probably going on 4+ years.. Damn, it's been a long time, hehe..

One of my good friend's number is 14358xx ;) Pretty damn low.

ICQ98a was a good small package without alot of the bloated junk in it, but eventually I decided to switch to 99b for "compatability" purposes, it's okay but some of the added features in it are completly useless, I don't bother with colored messages, although I have some people on my list who hate my bland choice of the default set of colors. I started using icq back in win3.1, was there even a color choice for the chat?

I've seen 2000a, and that has got to be the UGLIEST thing I have ever seen, I will stick to 99b even though it has the occasional file transfer glitch, it is still one of the better util programs for quick and easy messaging/file transfers I think.

If you go into preferences you can make 2000a look like 99b.

And I like ICQ. A definite advantage is that you can send messages while the other person is away. With AIM the other person has to be online.

there is that one "icq 2000" logo on the very top of the screen that could never be removed, right underneath your icq number, plus it also removed the ip address from the user info, and I find it quite handy if I need to look up a friends ip if they wanted me to connect to their ftp server, or some other type of server.

I've used aim, and yahoo messenger, the only good reason to have multiple messengers is if you have a friend who is stubborn and won't try a "new" thing, or in the rare case that icq dosen't work

Yeah, in preferences you can turn off almost all the crap. It doesn't look very bloated any more. I am staying with 2000a. Friggin 2000b adds a ICQ bar to Microsoft Outlook and I couldn't get rid of the damn thing.

My old icq number was 1069794...that must have been back in mid-late 1996.

icq2000 also has a messaging system like AIM, which I like a lot more. icq99 doesn't have this as far as I know.

Good, hogs memory but good. Not too bad, except that if you have two monitors you can't drag it into the second monitor, it tries to stick to the sides of the monitor it starts in. Suck! I may have an old version though.

I second that.

Even though it may not look as bloated if you turn the "features" off, but the memory usage is still there, 99b currently is taking about 7 megs of memory (if I am reading the program correctly) I'm sure that 98a is probably alot less, 98a's download size is 1.4mb, 99b was 4.5mb, that's alot of added junk.

ICQ is a nice program, I've been using it for about 3 years. The problem is that, with each new version (especially since AOHell bought it), there's been a ton of bloatware in it.
