what do you tell the barber/stylist ?

Any haircut that includes "number x" is total fail.

Why do you say that? Just curious.

As for the OP, for over 20 years I simply say "use a 1 on the sides, short enough on the top so it starts to lay down. Respect the part." Been saying this forever, and I usually get just what I want. Of course at my regular Barber, not much needs to be said.

I tell him "number 5 on top" just as a reminder but he knows how I like it.

He's a old Korean dude that is hard as hell to understand but does a good job every time without worry and it's just him in his barber shop called "mr Kim's"

No way in hell he's a "stylist" or not a "real" barber just because he uses clippers with guards for a consistent result for short hair.

#2 sides and back, taper it so their isn't a line, shorten it up on top.

Basically a high and tight.

high and tight
000 on sides, [and typically] a 4 on top
don't completely chop the bangs

[and sometimes: raise the sides a little, and shorten the fade/taper region so the shortest buzz goes up higher]

scissors are only good if I had the top taken down shorter than usual last time and don't want all that much taken off top.

I used to give instructions in inches.

Then I met a mathematically challenged stylist that buzzed my head to 1/4" after I requested 3/4-1"--"looks about an inch to me."

Now I give instructions in those attachment numbers to idiot proof the process.

High fade, 1 on the sides and back, very little bangs, leave enough on the top so it still lays down.

Been out of the military for 3 years and still can't let the hair cut or shaving go.

got cut today

2 on the sides, finger length on top

That's mine too. The place I go to has hot babes that give you a shampoo, hot towel, shave, and neck message thrown in. That makes me stick to a strict 6 week haircut schedule 😉

I tell myself not to cut me this time, sometimes it works sometimes I have a bandaid on my head for a few hoursD:
