What do you know about the Navy?

The U.S. Navy, in particular?

I'm 22, have some college, about to get married, and need to find a good way to pay for school as well as provide for my Fiancé. My health is pretty darn good and I shouldn't have any problems with any intelligence testing...

...but I heard the navy downsized some? I'm not finding hardly anything online about the navy not accepting people in the past few months, but should I not get my hopes up? I'm hoping to use the GI Bill as a way to finish a degree in Microelectronics. However, I don't necessarily need an electronics job while i'm there.

If you have any thoughts, opinions, knowledge or experience about joining the Navy, let them be known. If you are an active member of the Navy, you can PM me if you don't want it to be public.

Thanks in advance ,

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

What do you know about the Navy?

Well, the Navy is one of four (not counting the Coast Guard) branches of the US military, charged with defending American interests with regards to the oceans of the world. It involves the use of ships, submarines, various aircraft, and ports/bases, and occasionally gets involved in conflicts around the world.

Judging by all the recruiting letters they send me, I know that they must have psychics among them. They know all about my passion for helping others, becoming a doctor, and displaying my leadership qualities, and I didn't even know that.

oddly enough i work with a few ex Navy guys. All of em enjoyed their time, but the boat trips suck. And you work ALL the time when at sea.

I was in it for 4 years and the best way to get the answer to your questions is to go see a recruiter. You should not join without understanding that it is entirely possible that you will draw a sea duty assignment. As silly as that sounds I can't tell you the number of people that seemed shocked by that when I was in.

ask you GF if she's ok with you being away for months on end.

not all navy people are stationed aboard ships... but it would suck to be gone 6 months and heading back to port when some crap pops up in a third world country and the ship turns around.

You work 12 on 12 off while at sea if in air squadron and while that sounds tough it really isn't since there really isn't much else to do while at sea.

Do your best to get stationed on an aircraft carrier. Cruisers blow, and subs are even worse. Carriers are roomy, and are pretty much like a small city. Cruisers are cramped, dull, and boring. Subs are even worse in all respects. I'd off myself if I had to spend more than a week on a sub I think.

Nobody just gets posted to a submarine though. The silent service is very selective, and they certainly won't take anyone who hasn't specifically volunteered for submarine duty and passed the rather rigorous selection & training.

Why do you need to "provide" for your fiance? Can't she support herself? Why the heck are you getting married at 22 anyways if you haven't even finished college?

I was in for 4 years as an Aviation Mechanic. I drew shore duty first in San Diego and since i didnt re-enlist i never spent time on a ship other then to take a tour of the Enterprise. Shore duty was fun and actually really easy. But i dont think id like the 12 hour days 7 days a week while out at sea for 6 months while in sea duty assignment. There is a LOT of cheating that goes on in the Navy and id assume the military in general. Not just the men out at sea in various ports of calls but also by the wives left behind with other military people around. It was actually sort of sickening in a way the amount of infidelity there was. Just an FYI 🙂

Not everyone lives in the perfect ATOT world of fortunate events. I changed my focus, then was denied student loans. That simple. Going to the Navy will change that.

Also, she can provide for herself, and she most certainly will in most ways still (she will be working), but she certainly deserves better than to be renting out a room in a shared living area like we have now. Maybe a house?

I'm not worried about infidelity, and that says a lot because I used to be worried with every single woman I have ever been with prior.

I got a buddy (well ex brother in law) who loves the navy. he was on one of the subs.

NO way could i do it. not just being on a sub but out at sea for months? ugh no thanks.

Psst, they send the same letter to everyone. For you, what they really mean is your passion for cleaning toilets, becoming the lead potato peeler, and displaying your ability to clean puke off the deck.

I already signed up and they're sending someone here tomorrow. Is it too late to change my mind?
