Any idea what the condo fee is?

If you can afford one, 2+ bedrooms. Definitely do not buy a studio.

43 cents per square foot per month? It's actually pretty pricey and turning me a bit off. Stupid condo fee's

That's not all that bad. Most downtown condos are more than that. Check out 1 king west, it's $1.20 or something.

Wow for that price I could hire a contractor and have a pretty decent house built.

But you wouldn't be in downtown toronto. You'd be living next door to a place where dead people have been left to rot for weeks.

I think you'd have to go out really far into Markham, Mississauga or the 'urbs to score that price. Place is a nightmare. I get depressed everytime I go up there and have to walk more than 1 block on foot.

Only $.43 per square foot per month? That's not bad, the studio would only run you $250-$300 a month, which is way cheaper than rent. Couple that with the mortgage it'd be hefty, but at least you'll own the place eventually.

I don't think I'd pay that for a condo at that location - too far west from the core.

I live in a condo in downtown Toronto (Richmond St E.) and have been crunching some numbers lately on whether it makes sense to buy. What I've concluded is that it's completely nonsensical to buy a one-bedroom condo in this city: Unless you expect to be single for the next ten years, you'll need to upgrade to a larger space when the girlfriend/wife moves in, and you won't recoup the fees you've paid in a shorter timeline than that.

Helpful tool: NY Times: Is It Better To Buy Or Rent?

Renting and investing the difference seems much more logical than a "starter condo".

I live in Mississauga now. I moved here over a year ago. It's a total nightmare and I want to move back to Toronto. And houses still cost a shitload even in the burbs, you have to go really far off to get something cheap. In sauga houses are still 350 +. The commute is terrible too, I spend almost 2 hours everyday in my car driving.

Not really man. It's literally a 5 minute subway ride from the core. Plus this area is close enough to downtown. There's tons of stores, Annex, bloor west, roncesvalles. There's also the college bar/patio strip close by. If I want to go further south downtown I just hop on the 504 streetcar and I'm at king club district etc. I wouldn't want to live in the core core anyways, too crowded.

But I agree space wise, for me 2 bedroom + at least.

A two hour commute? Ya, that's the 'burbs and car culture for you. Hope you can at least drive downtown; I know people who freak out driving downtown because of all the j-walking plus bikes, and they don't know whether they can drive on the streetcar tracks or not. I walk to work every morning. It takes 40 minutes, and I get to go along Queen St. before all the drunkards wake up. Very peaceful and a great time for window shopping.

2 bedroom? My room is only 130 square feet, the living room is about 150 square feet, add 60 and another 130 for a kitchen and we have 470 sq.ft. in which I'm perfectly happy with at home (there's more room, but those are the only ones I use frequently). I'd be more than happy with the most basic studio.

Yea I lived in Toronto for 17 years, I'm pretty good driving downtown. And you're right I know so many people that do not come close to downtown with their cars because of fear. Especially the suburb people. Heck I even know some women drivers from work who will take eglinton all the way from Oakville/Mississauga to Toronto because they are scared of driving on the highway.
