Well I am getting a Gigabyte board, so I would assume you'd want the two to be of the same brand.

My list of parts I've "finalized" on is up above, but I'll repaste the mobo:

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

This is the PSU you want (would power your card just fine, along with other system parts):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139009

GTX 285
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814130480

and the 1tb OS question.

people just buy like a 80 Gb to install there OS on so if they want to upgrade there OS they dont lose all there Games, Apps, movie, Music, ECT

and just put all the Games, Apps, movie, Music, ECT on the 1TB

Why not get the EVGA gtx 295 and use the stepup program to get the new nvidea cards when they come out. Or sell it and buy a AMD 5000 series?

Would the gains of a 10k RPM drive really help that much in gaming compared to a 7200 RPM drive? I always assumed the real beasting came in the RAM, GPU, and processor and not the HDD itself? Where exactly would the gains go and in what magnitude?

medium: Stepup program? And the AMD 5000 series isn't out yet, otherwise I would probably get the 5870x2 or something.

Just loading times are different.

If money is the option sine you are sending a lot as is right now, stay with a 7200.

Heres a link to the Stepup program. If you buy a gtx 285, 295 now you can use its value to step up to the new G300 cards when they come out within 90 days.

http://www.evga.com/stepup/

The AMD 5000 series (and Nvidia g300 series) will be close to the power of the gtx295 or 4870x2 on 1 card with less heat and no sli/crossfire issues. I don't believe you will see a 5870x2 for many months as they usually don't make one at launch.
The Amd 5000 series are supposed to launch at 350$ at which time you can sell your gtx295 if you want and buy 1 then.

A GTX 295 is effectively two GPU's -- for games that can't utilize two fully (scaling issue), would a 285 therefore outperform the 295? I'd essentially, though, be trading in a 295 for a functionally-equivalent 295 without scaling issues?

Install OS, Games, Apps on SSD. WD Black is for data/scratch drive. Sell the 4890 when the ATI 5xxx series comes out. Oh I forgot a cheap $30 dvd burner... apologies.

Wow thanks for the setup there, jae... interesting choice of RAM. I googled OCZ versus Corsair Dominator and they seem to be comparable, but OCZ seems to have the price edge. Curious if there is somehow an inherent performance gain in the Corsairs as a result of the price premium or if it's a function of the brand name. Awesome comboing as well, by the way :p

Also I wonder if an 80 GB solid state is enough for games, after the OS has taken up its room and everything. If only SSD's were cheaper!

AirCooled: So if a GTX 295 can't utilize dual GPU's, it's like running a 260, which would be slower than a 285? So there IS some sort of inherent risk with a 295 if there are scaling issues?

That would depend on the game. (scaling issues). To be honest nowadays the scaling issues are getting better but you never will see the full power of both gpu's. At least not yet. I suggest you google the subject if you want to see benches. Usually you see anywhere from 50 to 85% scaling depending on the game.

No a gtx 285 will not outperform a 295.
Yes exactly, you will be trading in a 295 for the eqivalent with no scaling issues ,less power consumption, and lower temps.
I read that the new 5000 series will scale much better when crossfired also (95/100%).

If I were you personally I would wait to build a beastly system right now. We are on the verge of a new chipsets (p55),new cpu's i5's (which are only 5% slower then i7"s), new video cards Amd 5000/nvidea gt300 and a bunch of new games comming. For me now is not the time. Wait about a month or two for the dust to settle. If you must build now and you have the money go for it.

happy medium: I can wait... it's hard, but I can wait, haha. Would it be cheaper to buy a card and trade it up later or to just buy the card directly later? Is it safe to say that the GT300 will effectively be a scale-fixed GTX 295, and likewise for the 5000 series and the 4870x2?

Are there any benefits to an i5 over i7? I'm willing to pay more for the extra speeds of an i7 unless there are many other benefits to an i5.

the GTX295 would run two 275 (thanks medium) GPUs, its like running two 275's in SLi on one card, and everyone knows SLi doesnt do much.

If you only want a 80Gb HDD for games Most games average 6Gb's
75(not all drive are 80Gb's for cache, ect)/6=12 games that average 6Gb's each game.

Aircooled a gtx 295 is has more shaders then a gtx 260(its a gtx275 x2) a gtx 275 in fact is a 285 with lower clocks. With a little overclock it performs exactly like a gtx 285 and is on par with a a 4890 without overclocking.

I wonder if the GT300 will be better than the 5870x2, as the 5870x2 will likely still be prone to scaling issues? Unless the GT300 is a dual-gpu card like the 295?

Medium: Assuming the GT300 is single-GPU, what would you say to purchasing a 295 now and trading it for a GT300 later? Would it outperform the 5870x2, in theory?

Sekkai, I see your monitor size is 24 inch @ 1900x1080. (1080p).
If you can't hold out a little just buy a 1gb 4890 and sell it when you see reviews for newer cards and they better meet your needs and price range.
A single 4890 with play all games out now except crysis at high detail at a smooth frame rate @ 1900x1080.

I promise you this Sept. 10 the reviews will be out for the Amd 5000 series and Nvidia as allways leak there benchies for there new card. By then you can make a better purchasing choice.

First review of the new i5 platform here.
