I basically do the same job as Homer Simpson except for telecommunications. We monitor equipment, the network as a whole, even the buildings that the equipment is in (over 1,000 that we manage). We'll do some basic troubleshooting on some systems like DMS100, DMS10 etc.

Computer security with a speciality in mobile and embedded devices. I basically get paid to break the latest and greatest devices, operating systems, applications and firmware. I look at a lot more diverse stuff as well, but that's the gist. Stressful, but very fun.

Various health insurance related IT things. Basically everything from password resets and certificate updates to new AWS deployments.... with all the paperwork and bureaucrazy you would expect from a highly regulated industry.

I actually hate this question now. If I tell people I don't have a job, then it feels like I'm telling them I'm a loser. If I tell them I'm retired, then people start asking me all kinds of follow up questions wanting to know how I retired so young and my life story.

I haven't told my relatives and friends I'm retired. They think I'm struggling financially because I'm not working and asked me what I'm going to do for a job now. I told them I'm living on my small savings while I look for work and figure out what I want to do with my life.

Aren't you really a full time Tesla fanboy and options trader, though? :)

Go with that instead.

So plane on treadmill, will it take off?
I don't understand your reference. What I do is: When John Smith runs into a bridge pillar at 2:00 AM, what happened? I take the vehicle apart to eliminate a vehicle malfunction. I also handle vehicle arsons, vehicle manslaughters, lots of accidents if there is a question if the turn signal was on, or not. I also get into shops who do terrible repairs. I was involved with the GM Dexcool case, the Lexus sudden acceleration case and many more.

I really don't like conferences anymore, but they were pretty fun before all the corporate bullshit for sure.
Are you talking about conferences that get more sanitized\corporate oversight on approved 'fun activities' as they mature? I've noticed a difference between earlier iterations of conferences compared to when they get older. And not like the 'coke and hooker' kind of way but the 'PR has a huge budget and is trying crazy things' kind of way so you can wrestle an actual sumo wrestler or get two fingers of Pappy 23 year like it's NBD

More like hacker conferences used to be full of actual hackers who met to talk about new techniques and catch up, as most of us were online friends for years and had no real way to connect with each other all over the world... and now it's an opportunity for Carbon Black or whatever else the new hotness in garbage snake oil salespeople to show up and sponsor with their useless products and services. The entire culture has become just about monetizing products and sending troves of people who have no idea how computers work to fill giant venues.

They used to be more about community and knowledge, not so much anymore.

There are exceptions out there of course, but the culture is so different now. Those exceptions certainly do not exist in Vegas.

I'm currently a test engineer, primarily writing automated test software. Right now, I'm developing the tools the team needs to transition from our old test platform to our new one. I often do some hardware development, but right now it's pretty much just software, and helping to put out fires related to production testing, of which there tend to be many.

Besides that, sometimes I just walk around the building and act like a crazy, funny fool in order to get people to laugh.

I work in medical communications. We help pharmaceutical and biotech companies develop their medical education materials for compounds they have in development or currently approved, with the long-term goal of making sure the right medicines can reach the right people.

Day-to-day varies. Can be chock full of meetings, or developing slides, helping physicians put their thoughts to paper...

Long ago, I used to be a bench scientist, working in a lab studying protein structure. But pay and hours in academia suck.

Bean counter (CPA) reporting to CFO - attend too many meetings, stare at spreadsheets, supervise a team, liase with external auditors, liase with accounting, legal, HR and the BOD.

Everything I do at work is to piss off some wireless customers by haplessly dropping their calls, repeatedly. :D
