I'm in a permanent internship sort of position that pays reasonably. The purpose is to move around the organization, learn what various departments do, and then join one permanently.

Offices are hit and miss. I've been a 5th wheel in half, ridden like a bitch in the others. When I do work, it's bitch work including drafting, GIS, field visits, inventory, etc.

email address.

Drive a really big truck in the oilfields. I get into the zone and jam out the local rock/alternative stations or listen to sports talk radio. I get to see some beautiful areas locally and I'm home every day. Sometimes I get to some locations and I feel like a really lucky guy. Sitting on a hill somewhere enjoying a view and getting paid. Co treats me good too.

Where do I sign up 🙂

I install, maintain and repair big boxes with complicated moving parts inside them. These boxes are designed to very accurately measure the concentrations of specific chemicals in your blood sample so a doctor can diagnose you.

There are many more f'ed up truck driving jobs than good ones. I am pretty fortunate to have found a good one 8 miles from the casa. I started out 57 miles one way from my house because no one anywhere closer would hire me. 12 hour shift with a 1 1/2 hour commute both ways. Brutal. Did that till I had enough experience and found this job.

Provide legal opinions regarding employment law, weigh risk vs. reward in regard to business decisions and counsel leaders on the best action to take, lead a team that does the same for lower level leaders.

Lots of reading, politicing, manipulating and writing.

Bob, I take care of problems for half of the other departments in the building, while hoping that I might be able to do at least an hour or two of my own work. Despite this, I'm still praised for my productivity and attention to detail and progress in improving profitability. I can't help but wonder what might get done if I had a full day to spend on that engineering work that is so often kept out of reach.:\

I deal with the goddamn customers so the engineers don't have to! I have people skills! I am good at dealing with people! Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people? 😡
Oh how I wish we still had someone like that. (He quit >2 years ago and was never replaced.)

Call us up and you want to talk to an engineer? There are no roadblocks. Come right on in. We've got the highest-paid tech support staff in the US.
A piece of me still dies every time I have to take another call.

Today I looked at pictures taken with an electron microscope and argued with people about what the pictures showed. We also made labels for the pictures.

I'm sure there are I was probably being more fictious than anything.

Sounds you've gotten a good gig over time 🙂

And deserve it I imagine.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Bob, I listen, I read, I contemplate the machinations of technology, and then I write documents to make even the richest of the rich shudder.

A few days each week I sell computers and consumer electronics. I also beat on misbehaving computer and try to fix what my coworkers break on my days off. Sometimes I install systems for people who have more money than time.

On summer Saturdays I sell handmade bath and spa products, gourmet grill rubs, naturally smoked salts and other neat stuff at the local farmer's market for my wife's shop.

A couple of times a month I shoot photos for various real estate companies and I occasionally do senior portraits, weddings or other events. At Christmas I photograph Mr. Claus and kids at the local mall. Same with the big bunny at Easter.

Once in a while I sell a photo to the local newspaper.

Occasionally I do some web design and sometimes graphic design work for poster, ads, fliers, etc.

I also spin gobs of cotton candy to sell during the local parades, fairs and festivals several times a year.

Around that I fish, the most rewarding even though it doesn't pay very well. We should go fishing sometime, Bob. I know where the trout swim.

was so going to post that as the first response but didn't want to derail the thread that fast

I detect, intercept, identify, locate, record, and/or analyze sources of radiated electromagnetic energy for the purposes of immediate threat recognition.

I drink coffee Bob, sometimes I read the paper. Very occasionally I make sure the other workers are doing what they are supposed be doing, then I go get another coffee.

You forgot to say "Bob"

Bob people BOB!

When the big machines break, they call me, and i call the engineers. I tell them where the machine is, and they go and fix it.

Sorta-teach-but-mostly-supervise undergrad gen chem labs, and a lot of standard molecular biology/biochemistry stuff in my research (cloning, mutagenesis, protein expression and purification, running/designing experiments with a focus on kinetics, etc).
