Unless you OC the FX 4350 beyond 4.5 Ghz, the Phenom II X4 is FAR better

Some notes:

1.) i7-2600 increased in price $20 since I first listed it in this thread (This most likely due to the fact there are only a small amount of listings for this processor which adds to the variability of "buy it now" pricing)

2.) Both i7-2600 and E5-1620 are Sandy Bridge 4C/8T processors. The E5-1620 is a LGA 2011 processor with 200 Mhz higher base clocks and more cache (10MB vs. 8MB ) compared to i7 2600. Both processors have 3.8 Ghz turbo.

Right now there is a E5-1620 (advertised as fully functioning) on ebay from a US Seller for $140 (or best offer) free shipping in a "buy it now listing".

Not bad.

Looking thru the following GTA V results from PC lab (CPU test #2), both the stock clocked Lynnfield processors (i5-750 and i7 -860) did extremely well (considering their age).

Yeah, I've shopped for i5 2500, 2400s because I wanted vt-d and I've seen the same. Newegg is actually selling refurb i5-2400 (non-K) for $200. That's what I bought my 2500K for back in 2011 or something. A refurb one now costs more than a new one did...4 years ago.

Its not a surprise though, to get the same performance out of a new chip I think you're looking at around $200 anyway. So why not buy the old one for $50-70 off when there is essentially no performance difference?

As another said, there's not really much point to i3s. They perform fine, but a used chip performs better and has 4 cores and more features while costing the same. Going up from the $50 budget chips to $120 i3s seemed to buy you very little.

The only thing I can say about i3s now is s1155 motherboards are disappearing meaning its going to be harder to put those still awesome used i5 chips to use. But that's kind of the point of this thread...the old chips are as good as the new but since no one is making motherboards anymore (probably because intel stopped making the chipsets, not because of lack of demand) the chips become useless.

If I'm honest with myself I've only been upgrading because of habit. And its been so fruitless that even that has fallen to the wayside for me.

It's funny that the old Intel chips are cheap and great performers, but getting a new / finding a used board makes using one in a budget build pointless.

But AMD gets crapped on for a budget gaming box, when they still sell solid budget chips and new 970 / 990 boards.

Yeah I got a FX 4350 and it's not a bad performer although you're not going to get blistering results like you would on an i5. IIRC Athlon 860K performs better than the FX 4350 but the socket FM2/2+ is a bit unattractive in long term.

Phenom II X6 is still competitive today, but not easy to find - still got my 1090T.

For older games -- an $8 Athlon II 240 is a pretty sweet deal. Considering how easy / plentiful AM3 motherboards are to buy..... It's a great little way to build a nice dual core setup for pre-2012 gaming.

I got my i5 2400 on eBay for $140 in early 2011... No idea why seller was selling it so cheap but works great to this day. 2500k used are decent deal.

E8600 looks quite appealing for $20 on Ebay,got a Dell Inspiron 518 recently with a E5200 and for anyone not wanting to bother googling its specs its 2.5ghz with 2mb l2 cache and a 800fsb.

Q9650 i know is compatible but its nearly $50 and slower core wise then the E8600 and for the 2 games i play and casual youtubing/netflixing the E8600 would be the best upgrade ever i believe.

Rig is already running one of my spare ssds and some spare ddr2 has given me a total of 6gb.

Dropped in a $21 Q6600 to replace the E5200,desktop usage it seems to fit the bill absolutely perfect.I highly recommend this upgrade for anyone who wants a cheap upgrade to a 775 build.

With a ssd,don't let its slow clock speed scare you for desktop usage.Just worry about it when it comes to modern games lol.Can't have it all for $21 but just about anything else you can.Willing to bet big games like BF4 and GTAV simply will run better on the Q6600 that can cost you $21 then it would on the cheapest of Celeron cpus which cost 2x as much easily not including the platform upgrade.

Desperately need a new gpu first,games like CS:GO run excellent with the Q6600 as does COD BO2 but i'm stuck with a 800x600 resolution due to a ddr2 9500gt.:awe: Does deliver a respectable 25-41fps fps in GTAV on 800x600 low.
