You can get a new FX-4350 from Newegg for $74.99. You can get a Gigabyte UD3P 970 also for $74.99. That's not too bad for a basic system.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128651

Spend a bit more and they have an FX-6350 for $90.89 with a promo code (EMCATNV28).

Kind of makes buying a used Phenom II X4 a silly proposition.
Unless you OC the FX 4350 beyond 4.5 Ghz, the Phenom II X4 is FAR better

In the following review (done in 2013), a 4.0 Ghz Phenom II x4 was just slightly slower than a stock speed FX-4350:

Some passmark comparisons:

(I added E5-1620 to the list below)

i7 4790K ($339, 88W): 11237 CPU Marks http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-4790K+@+4.00GHz
i7 4790 ($305, 84W): 10074 CPu marks http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-4790+@+3.60GHz
i5 4670 ($224, 84W): 7407 CPU marks http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-4670+@+3.40GHz
E5-1620 ($195 shipped*,130W): 9100 CPU marks http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E5-1620+@+3.60GHz
i7-2600 ($150 shipped*, 95W): 8267 CPU marks http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-2600+@+3.40GHz&id=1

*on ebay "buy it now" listings

Some notes:

1.) i7-2600 increased in price $20 since I first listed it in this thread (This most likely due to the fact there are only a small amount of listings for this processor which adds to the variability of "buy it now" pricing)

2.) Both i7-2600 and E5-1620 are Sandy Bridge 4C/8T processors. The E5-1620 is a LGA 2011 processor with 200 Mhz higher base clocks and more cache (10MB vs. 8MB ) compared to i7 2600. Both processors have 3.8 Ghz turbo.

Right now there is a E5-1620 (advertised as fully functioning) on ebay from a US Seller for $140 (or best offer) free shipping in a "buy it now listing".

Not bad.

Looking thru the following GTA V results from PC lab (CPU test #2), both the stock clocked Lynnfield processors (i5-750 and i7 -860) did extremely well (considering their age).

My guess is the $21 LGA 1366 X5570 Xeon (being a Nehalem processor) would have also done well.

Yeah, but that's 45nm.. For under $20.. hard to beat the E5640, a 32nm 80 watt Xeon that overclocks/spanks the X5670 in CB scores.

I was lucky to get my 2500K chip for $150 at MC on BF, I've seen some used chips in the $130-140 range... o_O

Yeah, I've shopped for i5 2500, 2400s because I wanted vt-d and I've seen the same. Newegg is actually selling refurb i5-2400 (non-K) for $200. That's what I bought my 2500K for back in 2011 or something. A refurb one now costs more than a new one did...4 years ago.

Its not a surprise though, to get the same performance out of a new chip I think you're looking at around $200 anyway. So why not buy the old one for $50-70 off when there is essentially no performance difference?

As another said, there's not really much point to i3s. They perform fine, but a used chip performs better and has 4 cores and more features while costing the same. Going up from the $50 budget chips to $120 i3s seemed to buy you very little.

The only thing I can say about i3s now is s1155 motherboards are disappearing meaning its going to be harder to put those still awesome used i5 chips to use. But that's kind of the point of this thread...the old chips are as good as the new but since no one is making motherboards anymore (probably because intel stopped making the chipsets, not because of lack of demand) the chips become useless.

If I'm honest with myself I've only been upgrading because of habit. And its been so fruitless that even that has fallen to the wayside for me.

It's funny that the old Intel chips are cheap and great performers, but getting a new / finding a used board makes using one in a budget build pointless.

But AMD gets crapped on for a budget gaming box, when they still sell solid budget chips and new 970 / 990 boards.

One new Z77 board on Newegg, for $144.99.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293

Getting a used 1155 cpu and new OC capable board is a hard sell when a 990FX and FX 63xx or 83xx combo can do the same job.

I broke down & bought the Xeon E5640 quad core with H/T for $15 & intend to prove it's the best value in used processors. Cinebench scores in a week.

Intel Xeon E5640 CPU $15
Intel Extreme Cooler $16
Gigabyte X58 board $60
Kingston 12Gb kit $37

Running with the big boys.. priceless :)

Yeah I got a FX 4350 and it's not a bad performer although you're not going to get blistering results like you would on an i5. IIRC Athlon 860K performs better than the FX 4350 but the socket FM2/2+ is a bit unattractive in long term.

Phenom II X6 is still competitive today, but not easy to find - still got my 1090T.

Ultimate winner... If i5 2500k was Chuck Norris, and the Phenom x6 1100t was the Jackie Chan, this Xeon is the Bruce Lee of the chips.

For older games -- an $8 Athlon II 240 is a pretty sweet deal. Considering how easy / plentiful AM3 motherboards are to buy..... It's a great little way to build a nice dual core setup for pre-2012 gaming.

I got my i5 2400 on eBay for $140 in early 2011... No idea why seller was selling it so cheap but works great to this day. 2500k used are decent deal.

I'd say q6600 but finding a cheap mono and ddr2 is a pain.

The thread is about "Best value in a used processor today"
A $15 over clocked 80 watt Xeon that runs with a 3770K IS "the best value today"..

Honorable mention goes to AMD Phenom ][ X4 840T for $60 - a true Thuban with the full 6MB of L3 cache and cost quite a bit less than the unlocked Black Edition X4 960T.

E8600 looks quite appealing for $20 on Ebay, got a Dell Inspiron 518 recently with a E5200 and for anyone not wanting to bother googling its specs its 2.5ghz with 2mb l2 cache and a 800fsb.

Q9650 i know is compatible but its nearly $50 and slower core wise then the E8600 and for the 2 games i play and casual youtubing/netflixing the E8600 would be the best upgrade ever i believe.

Rig is already running one of my spare ssds and some spare ddr2 has given me a total of 6gb.:D

I got a $30 hardmodded 3GHz Xeon E5450 shipped from China...I won't even bother with the consumer C2Ds and C2Qs for S775 mobos.

Dropped in a $21 Q6600 to replace the E5200,desktop usage it seems to fit the bill absolutely perfect.I highly recommend this upgrade for anyone who wants a cheap upgrade to a 775 build.

With a ssd, don't let its slow clock speed scare you for desktop usage.Just worry about it when it comes to modern games lol. Can't have it all for $21 but just about anything else you can.Willing to bet big games like BF4 and GTAV simply will run better on the Q6600 that can cost you $21 then it would on the cheapest of Celeron cpus which cost 2x as much easily not including the platform upgrade.:)

I'll toss in my nickel for your bid for the best value. Oh...wait...that would push the price up. You just get the nod.

Later you can tell us (not all of us, of course, just me) how you can get an ASUS X58 board for $60.

@skipsneeky2:

Your Inspiron 518 can also take 5xxx Xeon:

http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/3/#dell

So eventually you could also mod with the Xeon E5440 (80W LGA 771 Xeon equivalent to Q9550) for $17 plus $2 or $3 sticker or E5450 (80W LGA 771 Xeon equivalent to Q9650) for $25 plus $2 or $3 sticker . My experience with doing LGA 771 mod here--> http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36890787&postcount=39

Was reading on that, was under the impression i needed to really tinker with the Bios or mod it and that actually scared me off.If its just a plug and play operation,i will eventually drop the E5450 in.

Desperately need a new gpu first, games like CS:GO run excellent with the Q6600 as does COD BO2 but i'm stuck with a 800x600 resolution due to a ddr2 9500gt.:awe: Does deliver a respectable 25-41fps fps in GTAV on 800x600 low.:D

Worst case scenario you would have to update the BIOS.
