If you describe my job according what I spend most of the time doing, then I'm a driver... who occasionally repairs and maintains laboratory machines.

My title is Field Service Engineer, though. I really like it. Lots of really nice perks.

construction estimator/project manager

love building. hate babysitting the subs who want to take less and less responsibility for their mistakes.
You are just jealous because subs make more money ;)

Was a security & DB developer, and I'm now a geothermal heatpumps specialist (plumbing/gas/HVAC).

I was a surgical tech and first assistant, worked at two different Level II trauma centers over several year period. Worked every specialty (general, ortho, neuro, OB/GYN, peds, vascular, plastic/reconstructive, ophthalmology, trauma) except for open heart procedures. Also have an EMT diploma but never used it.

You bet. GC takes all the risk, for usually less than what the major subs will make off a job.

I do web/mobile programming at work.

I would do the same at home (really looking to start some web sites that would generate some ad money) but I can't get myself started on it.

I present facts in light most favorable to my client in the expectation of an absurdly high fee. I like my job, it's like a different fucking game everyday. The only thing I would change is to grow a pair and play for myself.

The most significant one is probably the vehicle. They let me pick from about a half-dozen different models. I get to pick a new one every 90K miles or 4 years, and usually the 90K comes first. With the vehicle they give me a fleet fuel card good for all my fuel -- business AND personal -- so gas prices mean literally nothing to me. They pay for all the maintenance, and they pay for my insurance.

Oh, and when it comes time to get my new vehicle, they'll offer to sell me the old one at about 50%-60% of blue book value. I'm probably just gonna flip mine to make a few grand. I'm due for a new vehicle this fall. They're often changing the palette of models available, but I know that the Ford Escape, the Dodge Journey, the Jeep Patriot and the Dodge Grand Caravan are on the list, along with a few others I can't remember right now.

I don't have an office -- I just work out of my house. Some days, usually fridays, I don't even have to leave the house on business. When I'm not out on a call, I basically have total freedom. I get expenses covered as well, which includes meal expenses for days I work more than 10 hours.

There's a really good stock purchase plan and naturally all the health/dental/401K stuff.

I rarely hear from my boss, and he's fucking awesome anyway.

No doubt, my job rocks in a lot of ways. The trade-offs are periodic on-call duties for nights and weekends and unpredictable hours during regular workdays. I don't always get to clock out at 5 o'clock. I've occasionally had to work till the wee hours of the next morning in order to finish a job, and it's not like I knew it was coming when I got up that day. It can be tough to make plans after work during the week since I never know for certain what time I'll be off. I get paid handsomely for overtime, though.

Oh, I guess I could add that they supply me a Lenovo T61 laptop and PDA phone with unlimited voice and data. If/When it breaks, they can usually turn a replacement out to me in 2 days. I could literally stomp my phone to bits and have a new one in 48 hours. I even got to expense my bluetooth headset. :)

I have to be super careful with my driving record, too, since they insure me.
