What do CHEAP(frugal) people have no problem spending money on ???

Going out to eat just isn't worth the cost and misery.

Heck, I used to go to the grocery store when I traveled on the company's dime. The rest of the guys hated me because my expense reports were always so low. I just hated going out. It was much easier (and cheaper) to get stuff, go to the room (after a long hard day) and just sit back and eat. Had a microwave and fridge....what more could a person want?

I do the same as you. I buy groceries and make cheaper and easier (no going out) meals where I can.

But...my last two vacations have been cruises (and next one in June will be too). Expensive? Yes.....food...OMG! No worries about food on a cruise!!!

I spend a lot of money on travel/food/alcohol.

More than I should but I'm super cheap on everything else. $10 for a pack of socks!? wtf. $12 for a vodka/soda? okay.

To hear the ocean waves crashing and awesome balcony sex later at night 😛

As for a lot of my choices, many of them are just cost/benefit. I *could* go out to eat at a restaurant with two horrifically picky kids ages 3 and 7 and spend $5.99 for a kids meal they'll thumb their nose at and a $3 glass of milk they'll drink half of, plus put up with the non-stop anxiety of trying to keep a majorly disruptive ADHD kid under control.

Or just go to Walmart and make PB&J for a couple bucks for the whole week, $2.50 for a gallon of milk for the week, and order awesome thai food to be delivered to the room once the kids crash for the night. 🙂

When we vacation we typically stock up on yogurt and inexpensive, easy things for breakfasts and lunches that we can also pack on the go and not pay theme park extortion rates for food and snacks. Then we'll splurge a bit more at dinner time and do something a bit nicer (even if it is delivery/carry out). My kids are a pain in the ass at meal times and no amount of effort on our end has ever gotten them to eat better/more types of things.

Going out to eat just isn't worth the cost and misery.
True, except the balcony sex. I thought you were married too. 😛

Kids are grown and gone, so now, we'd much rather save on the room, and spend the extra on better meals, and better activities.

Iceland is the shiznit. And nobody fucking knows it.

I just told you guys it was the shiznit and I bet nobody makes the decision to visit.
See? NOBODY KNOWS!

This summer, I'm taking a cruise through Nordic fjords and onto Iceland, so I'll know about soon enough.

The hell? Company paying for your food and you are microwaving something for supper?? That's insane.....

wtf dude? I get back to my room, open up the "In-Room Dining" booklet, and buy the max my per diem allows. They even deliver alcohol!

I can't understand people who buy cheap guns. Especially, if they are for self defense. The saying "you get what you pay for" shouldn't be a factor in life or death if you can help it. Cheaping out on that Chinese knockoff to save a couple bucks certainly is going to be money well saved when your gun doesn't operate properly when you need it to.

they dont know any better. Same reason people buy 200 dollar computers and cant understand why it always has problems.

And like Rudeguy, I buy lots of holsters. I probably have at least three for each of my guns. A nice outside hip holster, a good concealed carry one, and a shitty one that I am too stupid to toss out.

More than half of our vacations - about 21/2 to 3 weeks a year

I know you are a math teacher but do you really have to embed arithmetic in your online postings too? How hard it is to type 10.5?!

To hear the ocean waves crashing and awesome balcony sex later at night 😛

Why would you want to hear awesome balcony sex? Do you cheer them on or shout words of encouragement at them?

After working 12 plus hours per day and riding with someone else to/from the hotel, I have no interest or energy to go out with them to eat. Pull something cold and refreshing from the fridge to drink and make a good sandwich. Suits me just fine. I get to jump into my shorts, lie in bed, watch TV in a nice cool (or warm in winter) room and eat at no cost to me. I have absolutely no issues with this and would do it in a heartbeat if I were to travel again for weeks at a time. I won't do it for a short day or two trip though.

I feel bad for the coworkers.

Why? They can do whatever they want. Besides, they helped run the place into the ground (and spending up to $50 per meal each by them didn't help) and the company closed the location (I left before then)....so there's that. I've learned that you treat a small company like you do your own finances. Even then, no guarantees that it will make it. I spend like a miser at my current place and it's still looking like it's going under (because of stupid management decisions).....even still, there is always pressure to keep costs down.

By the way, I still have two ink pens from that hotel stay that I carry every day (one is about empty). I've had them for 5.5 years. I've worn the logo off of them both.

I try to buy quality as much as possible, and I do that by buying used. In part, it's to save money, and it also leaves the new shit(semi-literally) for someone else. It's an ethical choice to limit the crap spread around the world. All purchases are considered for value, so there's really nothing I thoughtlessly spend money on. It helps that I have simple tastes, and consider comfort a weakness :^D I'd rather spend the night in my vehicle, and use the money saved for something I'd really enjoy.

That's why I stopped going into the gun thread. There is one person in there who flames and insults anyone who buys a decent gun. He's convinced Turkish knock offs are the only thing worth buying.

I'll stick to guns that I know will go bang when I need them to.

Dude, I know who you are talking about, and don't why you let him get to you. I'm not buying cheap knock off shit, but he can buy them if it makes him feel better. For me, with just about anything is, do it right the first time. And with guns, it's Glock, Sig, and HK, mainly HK. CZs are good too. For 1911, I prefer Wilson Combat or Nighthawk. Just my preference. He can buy whatever cheap knockoffs he wants, it doesn't really bother me. I prefer quality and track record, over some one off bargain bin special.

Are you Dutch?

My company highly encourages us to go some place nice for dinner if we are traveling. Most travel days are 12 hour days, so it's important to get a good meal in and relax. Breakfast is usually something at the hotel or gas station and if there is time for lunch, it's something quick. I think the reason they want us to try nice places is so the CEO will know where to eat if he goes there. But that's just a theory.

Work hard, be smart with company money but don't be afraid to spend a couple bucks to improve morale. Especially if it's your own morale.

I just don't like to argue with morons.

I really want a 43 and I really want a Nightmare. I'm just being cheap right now and holding back. One of these days Buds will send me an email I can't refuse.

Yeah I have enough guns these days.

My computers are one of my biggest things, but I've learned how to go a bit frugal there over time too I guess 🙂

No, I'm not Dutch. I did eat hotel breakfast and went out with everyone else for lunch. Most of the time, I was just too damn tired to go out for dinner. All I wanted after working 12 hours (sometimes, 7 days a week) was to get back to my room and relax there. If I was hungry, I could eat right in the room and I had no issue with it.....and my morale was fine other than the company just sucked (and even those that were there for years agreed on that - especially after it had just been acquired).

You won the thread.

You won the thread.

On a side note, my current company (the one I think is going under) won't even buy your meals unless you stay overnight and then, it's only dinner (no breakfast or lunch). I will generally go out and buy something in that case even if it's just Subway or whatever if I stay overnight AND I'm doing the driving (or can walk to the restaurant from the hotel). Considering I've been out of my bed two nights over the last 5.5 years (vs 60% of the time with the last company), it's not that big of a deal here.

A Glock 43 is definitely on my list, and a Nighthawk as well. I have a long list though. 🙂

I totally understand what you are saying. I think the big difference is when I travel, I'm on my own the whole day. It's normal to meet up with someone for dinner to discuss the day, tie up loose ends and blow off some steam. But for the working part of the day it's just me, a spreadsheet and the road.
