I have been shopping for the past 3days and then it hit me. I don't know jack about anything that goes in to an engagement ring. Could you post what you paid for what you got? I have a friend who trades rare gems but I'd rather not bug him until I know exactly what I want.

$1600, paid with cash. if you have to take out a loan, make it even less. People who take out large loans for jewellry should be drawn and quartered.

$3,000 at Helzberg, over 1 carat, I dont remember the clarity but it was pretty high up there.

I paid $5000 at a small local jeweller. Total weight around 1.5 carat. I don't remember the particulars...

I told the wife she can have a kick ass wedding ring or a house.
She wisely took the house.
 
find a friend that your gf doesn't know, and that also has the same hand size as your gf. bring her along with you and have her try on rings, pick the one that looks best on her hand. and good luck to you!
