I used Rufus to upgrade my old laptop to Win 11.

I use 3 levels:

1. Full 11 for TPM v2 chips
2. Rufus for older comps
3. Tiny11 for wicked old stuff

Ancient stuff gets ChromeOS Flex:

FydeOS is pretty decent too:

Would Rufus help me upgrade a Lenovo or Dell OEM Windows 8 to 11 with relatively low hassle?
Not sure if the laptop will handle Win11 really well, especially if it has an HDD. Those usually take 10 minutes to finish read/write after Windows is loaded.

Machines that don't have TPM but are still new are great to use for PVE nodes or other server related use. Some of the newer HP Elitedesks can take like 64GB of ram. I bought 2 a while back off ebay and came up to under 1k per machine including ram and 4 port nic. Tempted to get 2 more and retire the rackmount server which is an older gen Xeon that maxes out at 32GB of ram and probably uses more power. At some point I want to experiment with a Ceph cluster too, these would be good for that too. Put a 10 gig nic and a SAS HBA and could run 8 drives per node. 5 nodes would be 40 drives. Ceph starts to get expensive though, as you practically need 10gig and 10gig stuff is more power hungry. Was looking at Arista switches and they use like 300 watts idle lol.

yep, it's an old refurbished laptop with no useful data.
With Rufus, I didn’t have to wipe the machine. It is a 2011 Thinkpad, original Sandy Bridge. You have to pick the option in Rufus to skip the hardware check.

Download the ISO here:

Download RUFUS here:

You'll need an 8gb+ USB tick you can wipe:

1. Use Rufus to burn the ISO to USB with the settings below
2. Boot up to the stick
3. Chose the option to use the old installer after boot & delete ALL of the partitions, then install to the one single drive partition

First graders in 2025 have a more hectic daily schedule than me, a 35 year old professional. Christ almighty, no wonder the little homie is absolutely wiped in the evenings.

At this time of year I'm always grateful that school is over for me. I do not miss that part of life at all. Always dreaded September as a kid. I sometimes miss the non school aspects of childhood, but I wouldn't want to go back.

Why? I only need to use an ATM maybe once a month or not even that often. Almost everything is digital and cashless these days.

My thoughts exactly. That was a different kind of misery.

I just happened to have a $50 I wanted to deposit. Oh well, I'll just spend it on something useless instead.

Thank you so much. What will we do without our @Kaido instant pot savior if when the AT forums go offline?

I'm convinced that some of my buddies hate themselves, going back for a masters at 35-40 WITH multiple kids and a full-time job. Unreal.

I despised school. Failed 2.5 classes in high school, somehow still graduated with honors. Had to retake a couple courses in college, still graduated on time, and by the grace of god landed a great job out of school. You couldn't pay me to go back.
