It will greatly contribute to the social decay of the US and foster more generationaly dependent people/families. If your a 60's era hippie I hear there's a petulie oil allowance.

Give a man a fire, and he'll be warm. Light a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

$5500 is nothing to someone who is unemployed with a family to provide for a mortgage to pay. We need jobs and we need credit much more than we need cash.

I'll take your useless $5,500.

Hehe I am sure you would.
To make things clear, I don't believe the $5500 in the form of cash is useless. I just think we can get a lot more bang for our buck if it is used in ways other than straight cash to the people.

It appears that neither the government nor the people know what to do with this money. However, since the money originally was earned and belonged to the people, then it should be given back to the people to use it as they please.
The beauty of capitalism is that, without a lot of intervention, it tends to work itself out.
So, I say take the middleman (government) out of the equation since they have shown they are not better (if not worse) at spending our money as we are.

We are just going to have to agree to disagree. You believe that what the govt plans to do over the next year or two with the money will fail to result in the econ positively progressing much faster and less painfully than doing nothing and let it ride out "naturally". I believe it will succeed if spent properly and I also think we are on the right track so far, but I also understand that "so far" is just one chapter out of the entire book. The stimulus is in no way a silver bullet. Our government is aware of that too.
Your stance appears to not be so much a discussion about the odds of what will or will not work and why as much as it is your overall confidence in government period.
