I'd buy my engine for my truck. Engine, heads, cams is about 5 grand, but then I'd need another 5 for the supercharger.

I could use a driveway, that would probably be enough for a decent one with some cash left over. Maybe I could even go with a carport.

Nuke him from orbit, and he'll have friends in the afterlife, be warm for the rest of his life, and be able to see in the dark too!

TBH I would probably just send it right to the mortgage company, or possibly the company holding my wife's student loans.

If they gave it to me as a debit card/credit card, I would probably use it instead of my regular credit cards until it ran out (mostly groceries, gas and some utilities), but I doubt I would buy anything out of the ordinary.

Unfortunately, you're signed up for that bailout program whether you like the way they spend it or not. You're a taxpayer after all and where do you think that money's coming from?

Giving people money is like putting a bandaid on a decapitation.

Which makes about as much sense as this whole bailout.

I mean, they're going to take my tax money and then give it back to me in the form of tax cuts? Oh, wait - most of those cuts are going to be for the low-income people, right? So someone like me that makes a good living gives more and gets less. Makes perfect sense - if you like Uncle Karl's views on economics.

$5500 is nothing to someone who is unemployed with a family to provide for a mortgage to pay. We need jobs and we need credit much more than we need cash.

Hehe I am sure you would.

To make things clear, I don't believe the $5500 in the form of cash is useless. I just think we can get a lot more bang for our buck if it is used in ways other than straight cash to the people.

It appears that neither the government nor the people know what to do with this money. However, since the money originally was earned and belonged to the people, then it should be given back to the people to use it as they please.

The beauty of capitalism is that, without a lot of intervention, it tends to work itself out.

So, I say take the middleman (government) out of the equation since they have shown they are not better (if not worse) at spending our money as we are.

We are just going to have to agree to disagree. You believe that what the govt plans to do over the next year or two with the money will fail to result in the econ positively progressing much faster and less painfully than doing nothing and let it ride out "naturally". I believe it will succeed if spent properly and I also think we are on the right track so far, but I also understand that "so far" is just one chapter out of the entire book. The stimulus is in no way a silver bullet. Our government is aware of that too.

Your stance appears to not be so much a discussion about the odds of what will or will not work and why as much as it is your overall confidence in government period.

See bolded text - We do not seem to disagree that much. I guess I do not see a consistent history of our government usually spending our money properly.

I would love for the government to step in and be able to make things better faster. I am just not so sure that our government can pull that off.

I hope I am wrong.
