At work - I have an Optiplex 755 w/3GHz Core2 and 8800GT. Of course the 8800 is from my computer at home. :)

99% of the computers on campus are Mac Pros which run dual 2.26GHz quad-core Xeons, 6GB RAM, and a Nvidia GT 120s.

There are some windows boxes in one of the buildings that run a single quad-core Xeon, 4GB RAM, and 8800s.

Some of the school labs got new HPs over the summer:

Intel "Nehalem" Xeon W3520 2.66GHz processors
6GB RAM
NVIDIA Quadro FX580 512MB graphics cards

Our lab machines range from HP DC7100s to HP DC7900s (P4/512MB to Core2Duo/2GB). The oldest boxes are the DC7100s at about 4 years.

My box, OTOH, is an HP XW4400 dual quadcore Xeon with 8GB RAM and dual monitors (24" and 20" HPs). Sometimes it's nice to be a sysadmin. :)

The largest room in the Social Sciences Computing Lab at UCLA has HPs with C2Q Q9450, 4GB RAM, and ATI FireGL V5700 cards with 22" 1680x1050 LCDs.

I had a class in an adjacent room over the summer and there was some kind of kids' summer camp going on. A bunch of middle school aged kids were in that main room playing Starcraft, CS, CoD4, and other random stuff all day. Would've been fun to jump into one of those games to pwn them. :D

Where I work, they mostly use Dell laptops with Core 2 Duo processors, 2 GB of RAM, and 120 GB hard drives. Managers can get whatever they want, though. I've seen machines as small as an ASUS EeePc Netbook, up to a 17" unibody MacBook Pro.

I have the same laptop. It's not very speedy with the stock 320GB HDD though. It should be a lot faster with a SSD.

I want to know why we have core 2 duos all over campus, but all of the engineering labs have ancient computers in them.

Sounds like my workplace heh. I'm at a mid-sized software company, and while some people use C2Ds, I'm on a P4 system as are many others. We still have some P4 and even a few PIII :)Q) internal servers.

Seems like when a part breaks they just replace it and the old beasts keep chugging along LOL.

At work, most of our machines are P4 3.0 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, integrated graphics, 22" widescreen monitor. We have about 10 with an Athlon X2 3800. For our purposes it's all we need. When we do upgrade, I'm going to recommend going with virtualization, as we should be able to run all our desktops (~30) on one server.

I've got one of the newer machines at work. Dell Optiplex 760 w/two Dell 22" widescreen LCDs. Intel E8500 @ 3.16GHz with 4GB RAM. ATI Radeon HD 3400 for video.

We're an HP shop here at work, unless you got grant/government money and then you buy whatever you can afford.

I'm due for an upgrade in January, currently running HP NC6400, Core Duo T2400 @ 1.83GHz, 2GB ram, 80GB hard drive, Intel CrapGraphics, DVD/CDRW, 14.1" WXGA, intel b/g wireless. We all have a docking station with one external monitor.

Honestly the machines runs fine, and I dont really *need* an upgrade, but the new machines have 6 hour battery lifes, and 2.4GHz C2D mobiles, and 4GB of ram :)

My workstation (grad student) just got upgraded a month ago from a P4 2.0ghz with 1gb ram and one screen to Core2Quad 3ghz with 8gb of ram and dual screen. It was a glorious day. Someone else in my group is running dual quad-core xeons with 14gb of ram!

Lucky bastard, I worked in the Physics department about 10 years ago and I know that they are still using the P3-500s that I specced out and had ordered in a couple of places.
Before that they were using a Mac IIcx and some sub 100mhz Pentium machines.

Mission Campus?

IIRC, the Ft. George Wright campus is still SFCC...right?

At one time, they were going to merge both districts into one and call it all SCC.

(went to SCC and SFCC in the mid 70's)

At Modesto Junior College where I just graduated, the computer specs depended on what the intended use was going to be. Architecture and computer graphics labs had the best boxes, high-end ATI graphics cards, more RAM, faster processors, but ALL Dell machines.
The writing labs also had Dells, and a few older Gateways, the "general labs" were all Dells and some had good graphics cards, (reserved for architecture and computer graphics use) while others were just run-of-the-mill PC's with no high-end components.

MOST of them had things pretty tightly locked up so the most that was ever available was the general info on processor and amount of RAM.

Yep, and SFCC is there still but they added bunch of new buildings :p

My station has a 19" LCD...some have 17". Some still have mouse balls....wonder how old those things are????
