The thing with this is that I can see those two spots as the same color (by covering parts of the image). But I cannot for the life of me get that dress to appear white/gold

That wasn't the real mystery. It's how can people view the exact same picture (even in the same room on the same monitor / printout) and perceive it so differently

It's not news that people see things differently, and some are colorblind to a degree. We've all seen those little tests with images, and after images, etc.

I'm always right, of course. 😀

Your desktop display's brightness and contrast are off. Try increasing the brightness.

The confusion here stems from a number of factors.

This doesn't explain how on my phone on the same person's FB link I originally saw it white/gold and now on the same phone/post it's blue/black.

It's definitely not a monitor/screen thing, but a perception thing.

I mentioned human perception in that post as well but you edited that part out.

Read it may have something to do with shitty eyes.

I see blue/white and gold. Not 20/20, spherical prescription is in the -7.0 region.

My brain must be correcting for the terrible white balance based on the image as a whole. I saw black and blue.

I looked at the Gizmodo article and the dress in their photo looked completely different. I quickly scrolled back to the OP and looked, and it was white and gold for about 3 seconds.

Now it's black and blue again and I can't see white and gold. This all occurred on one monitor.

wow wtf, I looked at this thread half an hour ago and it was blue/black. Now it is white/gold.

It was light blue/gold for me about an hour ago (I had perfect perception as far as the RGB values go for that dress which indicate it is light blue and a darker gold). I watched some youtube videos and now it's black and dark blue.

Admittedly, I'm on a shit display but it isn't /that/ bad.

There's no blue or black, only people who don't understand how lighting works. I could call it an optical illusion, but it's way too cut and dry.

I love how the color of a fuckin' dress can "go viral" .... god help us all. Back to my morning coffee and maybe some, you know... local, relevant news.

The real question is... What phone was used to take this pic? We can finally answer the question of what phone has the shittiest camera, because anything capable of making a blue/black dress look white/gold must be damn awful

Most news is completely irrelevant to your life. This dress has just as much impact on your life as most news you'd see on TV.
