Yeah I'm mostly being facetious. My wife was so confident that it was white and gold last night and considered me the crazy one. Even pulled out the buzz feed study to rub it in my face (was 75% in agreement with her).

Then I wake up this morning and see most of the scientific responses supporting my beliefs. Warmed the cockles of my heart, maybe below the cockles, maybe in the subcockle area even.

Holy cow...

So apparently this has divided the office. People are literally arguing about it.

I'm going into chat to stir the pot

I think the whole point of this is that there is no "wrong,"

There definitely is a wrong. The dress is made up of a blue fabric and a black satin (which reflects light and can appear white if viewed off angle enough). Combined with a potato phone that cannot color balance at all and is beyond over exposed.

It's the blue fabric that looks white to some people. The black fabric looks gold.

Hence the potato phone being used to take the picture is just all around wrong with the color balance. But I never once saw white. I saw the blinding over exposure to the right but it did not influence the fact that it was clearly a blue/black dress.

♫ Hey
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
A dead man's touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Don't bring you back
Blue on black
Oh yeah, blue on black ♫

Some people see blue on black, others see gold on white. Maybe it depends on where you start.

Considering image editors shows it to be gold and light blue (which is what it looks like on my CRT), doesn't that make this entire story a loaded question? Unless people want to start arguing against the RGB standard.

I saw it as whitish and gold all day then I printed it out. It printed out blue and black. Then I looked at the pic on the computer again and it was blue and black this time. Now it's still blue and black. WTF!?!?!

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/thedress-goes-viral-sales-soar-164900819.html

The retailer, Roman, said sales of the outfit that sparked #TheDress debate soared 347% Friday.
Some people were convinced the dress was black and blue; others saw white and gold.
"I can officially confirm the color is royal blue with black trimming," said Michelle Bastock, Roman's fashion director, during a television interview with CNN's Nina dos Santos.
Bastock, who wore the dress during her CNN interview, said she planned to start offering a white and gold version. It would take about six months to make it available.

LOL. I looked, saw white and tan, then hid the article heading and asked the wife, she said blue and black. My mind was blown. Even after seeing them both and the explanations etc, I still see white and tan, just maybe a bit bluer white now. She'll be using this against me for the rest of my life to claim she's better than me.

But it isn't. It's being lit from the back.

Opaque things (disregarding the kinda see-through neck area of the thing in question) cannot be 'lit from the back'. While the major (or only) originating source of light may be behind something, it is still being rendered visible to your eyes by light that it coming from the front.

If you assume the dress is in a dark area and it's daylight outside (I dunno if that's actually the case or not), then what is BEHIND the photographer is going to play a role; e.g. a black wall versus a white wall are going to make the picture look a lot different.

Though I think what you're really trying to get at is that the camera is trying (and failing, at that) to adjust to the lighting of the background, rather than that of the content.

Why are people making a big deal about a PICTURE of something? See the real thing and then argue about what you see.

I assume it's just another crappy cellphone picture.

It's a big deal because it shows a difference in human perception. Wars are started for less due to lack of understanding. It's pretty crazy really.

Regardless of how the picture was taken, or what effects of lighting have, you still have 2 distinct perceptions of that very same picture. That is quite interesting (to many).
