What can a PC do that a PS3 can't?

run at a resolution higher than 1080p

well, most console games are 720p or less

with a PC we can be guaranteed 1080p @ 60fps or higher

For instance i can choose to run 2560x1440 @ 60fps on my Dell U2711 or 1920x1080 @ 120fps on my BenQ XL2410T

with a console we might be stuck with 720p @ 30fps or possibly worse

I'm about to build a ~$1000 PC for gaming, and I need you guys to give me some ideas about what I can do with it to push me over the edge and just buy it. HT related stuff would be the best.

I put this in off top since it actually belongs to a number of different boards and I can get a general idea here.

thats a pretty odd question to have with that kind of budget allowance unless you need things like game rentals, resale values and streamlined interface for gaming and its exclusive titles.
Cause WMC and a BR optical drive alone does everything the PS3 does except the gaming part.

where are people buying monitors that run higher than 1920x1080? I wanna get one that isn't too inexpensive...but haven't seen monitors higher than that resolution. Is it because i'm not looking at higher end monitors?

If you want more then 1080p you need to look at monitors around $1k.

If this is a serious question you should just go buy one of the $199 PS3 deals floating around today and get a nice $800 TV to go with it. That's what I would do.

Seriously though...by the time you need a new graphics card, you usually need a new motherboard because there's something on the new card that isn't compatible.

Then a processor upgrade usually gets thrown in on top of that.

and memory

i'm on a 32" now, but plan to get a 42". Contrast and size are just a couple things i'd rather have than resolution. 1080p seems fine enough, no need to kill my fps worse than it is.

1080p for all games.
> 1080p for all games.

Keyboard+mouse control for games that benefit from it.

Since OP mentioned HT related stuff in regards to PC gaming. A KB/Mouse for HT kinda suck. i got a wireless kit to do so once, but its still kinda a pain to do from the couch in any really quick or comfortable fashion. Some people use boards to set on their lap but i find that an annoyance.

Now maybe a Cell phone to use as remote/kb for general usage might be ok, i ended up not using an HTPC for any kind of gaming as the interface and interaction was not seamless enough for me, but WMC remote and general media usage is great. Much better than it used to be years ago.
Kinect maybe?

I use Touchpad Elite from my iPhone and iPod Touch. Connects to any VNC server, so it doesn't require a specific software utility, unlike similar WiFi touchpad apps.

The PS3 sucks as a source (HTPC) for a home theater. I sold mine a few months ago because it could only play about 1/3 of the video formats I threw at it.

PCs cost more but are so much more flexible ...

And everything that naturally follows from these.

Ok technically a PS3 can use one too, but that's besides the point.
