What books of the Bible should I read?

Genesis and Exodus (how it all begins)
Then 1 or two of the Gospels (a lot is repeated, and all the important stuff is covered in all 4)
Romans (the foundation of Christian doctrine)
Revelation (how it all ends)
 
good topic, I have a great book I wish I could share with you called "briefing the bible" by the late Dr. J. Vernon McGee, the only radio preacher I could ever tolerate 🙂

Having said that, here's my experience. When I was a Sunday school kid, some of the first reading that I ever did "on my own" for enlightenment was the four gospels of the new testament, they just work on so many levels that it can't hurt to go there.

HOWEVER! Later in life when I really needed to take a fresh look at the bible, it was the Proverbs of Solomon that enthralled me and awoke a fresh respect.
 
Whatever the chapter is with all the cool little sayings. It is not actually a story, but rather a bunch of little proverbs. Wait, is there a Proverbs? That might be it, but someone back me up to be sure/

Have to agree with you there. Personally, I think the entire message of the Bible can be summarized into Matthew 7.
 
I'd also go with Mark or John... short, sweet, tells you a lot about Jesus and what he was actually like rather than what pop culture tells you. Not much boring about it since Jesus tells lots of stories and does lots of miracles.

Proverbs is just a lot of sayings and wisdoms... it's a pretty hard reading to get through just from a reader's standpoint.

A lot of the Old Testament is a snoozefest with all the family trees...

Personally I liked Acts since it covers what a lot of what happens to the early Christians and you see a lot of parallels with their difficulties in the faults and criticisms of the modern church.
 
And if you want to know about love, marriage, & sex, read the song of solomon. It is said that Jew men aren't allowed to read it until they are in their 30's.

Search on a talk by Tommy Nelson. Good stuff.

Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) and then pretty much any other book written by Paul (or thought to be written by him) -- Romans, Galatians, 1/2 Corinthians, Colossians, etc ...I would either start with Romans, or one of the Gospels, though. 🙂 Good luck!
 
I would read a text found in Egypt in 1945 called the gospel of Thomas. It presents, I hear, a side of Christianity that was edited out of Christianity by the early church. Even then there was a debate about Jesus and who Jesus was. John was apparently written as a rebuttal of the Thomas text. The question is 'who was Jesus?' The part that was suppressed, and it doesn't take a lot to understand why, is that you and Christ are one. It isn't that Jesus is God in some way that you aren't too. Jesus is the light, the same light that's in every man. For the Christians who censured Jesus' scope, they personalized him as the way. In doing so they closed off that other vision that we are supposed to evolve into Christ, become Christ conscious, not just have faith in His. Religion is a bridge to another world. It always breaks down when the teacher dies. Humanity is asleep and cannot act other than as a machine.

lol, that was pretty funny... reminds me a of some movie but I can't remember which one

I'd skip right to the Gospels. That's the meat and potatoes of the Bible, in my opinion. The only lesson I see worth learning from the Bible is to love one another.
