classic rock is about two things: the music and the era. 30 years from now todays music will not be called classic rock.

They'll likely all be forgotten like the 80's. All except for maybe Nirvana, Metalica, Tool, and Pearl Jam.

F**k Lincoin Park, system of a down , Megadeth, and the rest of the bands that can't sing or make a decent lyric.

When it comes to music, I weep for the future.

Jimmy eat world? what the hell is that?

so... suggest it then. which I am taking it you are.

i never said my list was complete ;)
and you have never heard of JEW? They aren't like godsend or anything, but pretty much pioneers of the original emo genre, which is NO WAY related to the pop-punk crap people like labelling as emo. The original emo acts could be seen as post-punk/hardcore acts. But with each album, JEW has slowly mellowed their sound.

emo eh?

HELL NO!
:p

look up the history behind the creation of the real emo genre back in the day.
and look to JEW's Static Prevails, Clarity, and Bleed American albums. you've probably heard songs from Bleed American like 'Middle' and 'A Praise Chorus', among others. ;)
probably shouldn't have mentioned emo as first. Current music that people refer to as emo completely gives a negative connotation in regards to true, post-hardcore emo.

I honestly hope you can see the irony in this statement. ;)

I can also safely say that I haven't heard, nor would recognize any of this. I haven't watched MtV/VH1 in some 10 years +, nor have I listened to any commercial, let alone sattelite radio in nearly that time.

my tastes swing towards classic rock, jazz, classical, etc. I'm far from the perveyor of all that is good in contemporary popular music (I only listen to a few current bands--I honestly think a good 90% of the music out there today is utter crap. and yeah...Wilco sucks too. I'd much rather hear a real Blugrass o Folk group)

anyhoo, listening to music isn't my past time anymore. I prefer to read, or rot my brain with TV/film. so take my music opinions with a grain of salt. I can say with great confidence however, that anything falling under metal/death metal/goth/emo whatever you want to call it is utter tripe and has no lasting ability (in a music sense, that is ;))

Did you just compare Kid Rock with Skynyrd? Please tell me you're joking.

Genres are more clearly defined now, I have a hard time seeing lots of these bands ever being classified under classic rock. Hmm.

almost all of the bands bolded are definitely based on musical taste. But to deny Coheed and Cambria, when all the musicians are actually highly talented (considering they also just picked up Chris Pennie, a drummer who, for regular rock purposes, gold. He may be no speed-metal drummer, but then again we haven't heard him try that style of music. Listen to his stuff from when he was in Dillinger Escape Plan to get a taste of his abilities. Musical taste aside, as most of you are likely going to hate DEP, I'm no fan either, drumming is key in that band).
Regardless, look at it this way. Led Zeppelin had music, on each album, that varied so greatly. Co&Ca also will have variety in their styles, but for the most part it's all prog meets classic meets metal.

do this, seriously. Listen to these Coheed songs: 'Welcome Home', 'The Final Cut' (any of 'The Willing Well' series will do for prog-style rock, Final Cut gets Pink Floyd-like in it's approach), 'In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3', the 'Velorium Camper' series, 'The Light the Glass', '2113', 'Time Consumer', and 'Delerium Trigger'. Don't just pick one and say they all suck either, as each is very different in their sound approach.

read this review of their album dropping later this month:review

listen to this acoustic cover (including vocal melody played on guitar) of one of the songs on the new album: cover
I would say listen to the live audio of the music, but the AQ is horrible and while if you know Co&Ca's style you can pick out what direction the song is heading into, it's kind of hard to discern it in its entirety.
honestly, I know musical taste varies greatly, but to hate on a band for the vocals alone (and actually great vocals, just in a higher pitch), is ridiculous. Well, to dislike them personally is ridiculous, but to say that they shouldn't be liked is another thing. I actually believe Co&Ca will be the only modern rock band to see a LOT of replay later in the day. I am just curious what they will do once they finish all the story (this album will be the final chapter, they will make another album that serves as a prequel. That's the 5 chapters that are planned. They might change their name and just do regular lyrical stylings, who knows. That's what I am hoping. I would love to see some non-concept material, as Claudio has proven the concept itself is golden.

I think most bands of this era, if someone really liked them, will be bands that specific people will listen to to reminisce of 'the days'. But I don't necessarily feel they will find a new stardom in some distant time like a lot of classic rock bands have. we'll see though.

coheed and cambria suck really bad. They really violate the honored musical traditions like having intros, outros in a rapeful kind of way.
And if you want to throw the rules out, at least sound decent or inventive. Oh, and the vocals are horrible.

I think I've already heard "Basketcase" on a classic rock station. I like Green Day but WTF? Classic rock?

for the Coheed and Cambria haters, read on:
the new album is probably going to amaze even you.

today, their newest track was posted on their myspace as a teaser for the new album.
it's called Gravemakers and Gunslingers. Listen here:
click me

kick ass track.
and although you can listen to this BBC radio program that has an 18 minute part with Co&Ca, available to listen through a flash player here or grab an uploaded copy of JUST the coheed part (roughly 18minutes) as an mp3 that one of the forum members of that fan site uploaded (found here). skip around to find the songs if you want, or listen through all of it. really some great stuff, and the interview parts are very revealing.

enjoy. :)
this is going to be their best damned album, although they are either changing their sound or using a style of sound that really fits the narrative (this is an ending to an epic sci-fi saga). Wonder if the prequel album will be more like their other albums or continue in this direction.
