If Wilco and The Arcade Fire are obscure than EVERY band except for those that have current top 50 hits can be considered obscure.

What top 50 Billboard singles has either band had? Even more on point, which has had a single that ever reached top 50 status on Clearchannels rotations/airplay?

The few college and independent stations and satellite radio may consider them mainstream, but by definition, those listeners are not the "95%" we were discussing.

That's my point. The top 50 is so controlled and popular that if that's all you consider not obscure, than there are hardly any bands that arent obscure. If any band that is not known by 95% of listeners is obscure, than a better thread would be "What bands ARE obscure". Wilco is popular, The Arcade Fire is popular, and several others that have been mentioned (OAR, Sufjan Stevens, and Motion City Soundtrack) are not obscure...hell, Motion City Soundtrack played on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night.
