After seeing "We are Scientists" enough I downloaded their first song on a CD and it was a song I was sick of from being played on the radio....
But thanks to those who recomended Floater- I'm digging their sound so far.
Couple of my bands-
Joseph Arthur
Choking Victim/Left Over Crack
Death by Stereo (Great live band)

CLEARCHANNEL sucks!

Fixed.

Sadly, though I listen to much more obscure stuff, I'd say:

The Arcade Fire
Wilco

Because they've never even sniffed clearchannel's playlists here. Unbelievable.

Arcade Fire...obscure? Probably last year...they were even featured on Entertainment Weekly Once....

Wilco either. I'd say the majority of the bands listed in this thread aren't really all that obscure, but they are obscure enough. 😛

What is the criteria though? A magazine article that's trying to preserve the magazine's reputation as eclectic, or actual airplay?

Both of those bands get major run in print and ZERO airplay on clearchannel, whis owns 100% of my local radio market.

TOM WAITS!
Her Space Holiday.

Waits is great, but I wanted to ask about HSH - Ive only one song, and it was catchy, but it was definitely a political song about homosexuality. Is that a theme for them or just a one off deal?

The question wasnt meant to be answered. You missed the point. Even more mainstream bands like those two are obscure because the clearchannel nazis wont play them because they arent fabricated, easily marketable, highly disposable trash.

The big record labels used to have a seperate philosophy for artists they considered to be truly artistic/important. They called them "legacy artists", and they stuck by them through thick and thin, almost regardless of how well they sold. Folks like Bruce Springsteen (thanks to Bob Dylan) owe their careers to this philosophy which has died out as music has undergone mega-corporatization. Now, it's just produce the lowest common denominator and the cheapest price cause it will sell, and screw the rest (which has been driven underground). Clearchannel is part of the machine. Bands like Wilco and The Arcade Fire are obscure because 95% + of America has never heard one single note of their music. You may think otherwise if you base it on your friends and listening patterns, but you're wrong.

If Wilco and The Arcade Fire are obscure than EVERY band except for those that have current top 50 hits can be considered obscure.

You cant get any more popular than Alk3 before you're a huge mainstream band.

Thank you. This had to be said. Although their first several cds were fantastic, they are definitly very close to mainstream if not already there. I have seen them on MTV actually...

QFT

Van Go is pretty good too ( not Go Van Gogh) and I think not too many people have heard about the band.
