How many hardware enthusiasts are out there compared to your Average Joe? Average Joe is where the hardware company makes the money from because they are the biggest majority.

Newegg's X1900XT 256mb
Cheapest with AR is $235, and the otehr two are $299/$329

ZZF's only X1900XT 256 $299

No X1900XT 256 in Mwave. So we take the Newegg's ARed X1900XT 256 as overall price of the X1900XT 256? While 256 arent even widely availble.

X1900XT 512mb all averaging $350~

7950GTs averaging ~$304
7950GTs MSRP is $299

X850XT PE from ATs own realtime pricing. These are NO where near 7600GT price

You cant count in AR, because this varies from place to place, and most retailers hardly give AR.

I don't get you're reasoning here. When I go to buy a videocard I don't ask "What is MSRP?" I ask "What is the lowest price I can find for this card?". That's how most rational buyers I know purchase things.

Now, how can you compare X850XT PE to a 7600GT? a 7600GT is in QUANTITY world wide, while the X850XT PE is not even production anymore. This is the same as X1800GTO. It uses R520 core (out of production), and compared to the 7600GT, it doesnt match it in quantity. nVIDIA can deliver similiar performance/features/IQ with less money.

I get what you're saying, and I agree with you in part, but the X850XT still has great availability (Newegg alone has over 100 in stock at $119.99). The cheapest 7600GT is $109.99 AR. So if by less money you mean $10.00, than yes, Nvidia can deliver it cheaper.

edit - Josh although i understand what your talking about, I think its too much to say that at X1900XT 256 is a mid range card.
I don't considering an X1900XT 512MB is considered a midrange here. I know what you mean though, way too much performance for a traditional midrange card. While in that article they said that the X1900XT 512MB extends itself a little beyond the normal midrange boundry, the X1900XT 256MB can certainly fall within it due to its noticable price difference.
Right now, this is how i see it.
Ultra high end - 7950GX2/X1950XTX +SLI/CF ($399 and up)
High end - X1900 series/7900 series ($199~$399)
Mid end - X1600/X1650 series/7600 series ($99~$199)
Low end - X1300 series/7300 series (under $99)

For us enthusiasts.. its pretty much a joke. But its reality.
So true. I can't believe that people have an X1600 or less and are gaming. I swear I'd have to be blind to enjoy that, but that's just me. Several friends of mine don't mind gaming on hardware like that until they come to my place and see their games running on cards that were just ~$100-~$200 away from what they bought. Needless to say, they've all got 7800GT's or greater now.

The state of 3d/Economies of 3D.

This article IS VERY indicative of the cost of various GPU cores and why NV/ATi uses various pricing methods.

While NVIDIA has been much more conservative as of late with their architectural decisions, they have executed every step very well. There is a reason why Jen-Hsun Huang was very upbeat about gross margins on their products approaching 45%. NVIDIA is able to produce chips that are on a performance level equal to the competition, yet can be produced for a much lower price. NVIDIA and its partners are dancing all the way to the bank with the margins they are making across their entire lineup. ATI and its partners are limping along, and ATI?s gross margins for their graphics business are around 28%. Granted, integrated chipset graphics are included in this amount, but when a high end 7900 GTX retails for slightly more than a X1900 XT or XTX, yet the raw die cost is 1/3 that, we can see why NVIDIA shareholders are quite upbeat about the near term prospectus.

When people go and buy Video cards, they see MOST cards priced at their MSRP because MOST retailers use MSRP of that product. Its only us hardware enuthsiasts or people who have some knowledge resort to researching AR/sales/discounts etc.

Newegg for one has loads of ARs, plus lower prices than other retailers in the US. One reason many buy at Newegg.

I found this ($303.63) one in about 10 seconds via Froogle.

X850XT is only a tad slower than an X850XT PE and you can find one for $119.99.

Im talking in overall. Theres a difference. Not just one specific price of a product but numerous. Maybe im getting way out of my head, but those "one" prices arent indicative of their overall price throughout the world. You cant just say, "...hey i found a X1900XT for 303~. ATi surely must have the price advatange.. when across in Aus for example, you see a hideous price of US equivalent of $420~ which happens to be their lowest..." Do ATi have the price advatange now?

For us, price maybe different because we KNOW where to buy the best bang per buck cards. For average joes.. its a whole new different world with prices of video cards that we enthusiasts will dread from.

Not to mention the market place is VERY big. But one thing to know is that MOST retailers as i said many times price video cards based on their MSRP plus shipping fees from its manufacturers/NV partners.

But i have to admit. USA gets some of the sweetest of all deals on video cards (if you know where to get them). Lucky you. :p

edit - Sorry for derailing the thread. I never going to do this again :D i promise~!

Penstar, how mega boring. This guy has been shilling nvidia for quite a while.

Fine, i wont count AR, that just makes NVIDIA cards worst off considering most of the AR are for nvidia cards.

Most retailers hardly give AR? Say that to CompUSA

ATI has got NVIDIA beat for price/performance, the only reason i could see why a person would buy a nvidia card would be power consumption and noise.

This was my main argument. I dont see how NVIDIA selling more cards has anything to do with ATI's price/performance. Whether or not Joe can find these prices the prices are still there and still stands.

So tell me how B&M affects the bang/buck of a vid card?

So.... 7950 GX2 cards going down in price following nvidia's desire to liquidate G71 stock?

What's all this crap about msrp again? The average retailers of joe shmoe dont necessarily stick to msrp either, in case you missed the $650 msrp 7800gtx-512 that joe bought for $1000 a piece last year. If the market price falls below msrp then that's what the card sells for, who cares about its msrp?

Dunno.. what is nVidia gonna do now that two Ati cards in Crossfire perform better than 4 of those cards you speak of in Quad SLi?

all i know. is lower prices from competition is good for us. Just grabbed a 1950XTX.. I plan to crossfire it.. and with my feeble amd x2 4800 the set up should fare well against even the might Conroe teamed up with the nVidia SLi or Quad Sli..

If Nvidia are dumping cores, maybe they are getting ready to release G80, I wouldnt be buying a card right now unless I had none.

The G80 won't be cheap, so this may be the time to jump on a hot deal.

When Conroe hit, AMD took price slashes. I jumped on them and have the equivalent to an FX-62 right now. Yes, there are better processors, but that will do all I need it to for current gaming. I would go Conroe, but I've been waiting for the quad-cores to come along.

Point is, brand new technology comes out, yesterday's technology gets nice price cuts, we get to choose between having yesterday's best, or today's only option.

Screw Dx10 which no games are written for and bloated assed vista required to run it. I just upgraded to XP last year and I'm getting my monies worth! Everyone should order two of these and be set for a long time.

Good move two GTX's, and that's what these are dispite thier GTO moniker, are waaayyy faster than GX2. Cheaper, and I bet quieter too if I know anything about those little 60mm blowers NV started using back to FX cards all the way to GX2. High rpm and high whine.

Remeber it's not db nessesarly it's type of noise. A high pictched 60db is far more annoying than a low pitched whirl of 60db. And the GTX's won't even get that loud.

It's not a new mainstay card.

However, even though it's slightly slower than the 7900GTX, i'd rather have the 7900 GTO 512 MB over an X1900XT 256 MB.

also b/c of the superior cooler.

Yes.
Though it's not so much superior in how it does the job.
It's just superior in the sense that it's very quiet :)

ATi doesn't have much of a reason to get afraid, with a 256MB 1900XT for few bucks less and a 1900XT 512 in or below 300$, ATi may be further ahead or atleast pretty close to nvidia.

Price went up by 10$. Dang it, I should have woken up earlier. Anywho, I ordered one since it won't be getting cheaper than this anytime soon (hopefully)...
