Never heard it called "changing the oil" before, and thanks for the description of it running down your arm.

That's what I always say.

Hey, I can build a computer. That's "manly" enough for my line of work. Leave the engine building to mechanics and the home building to carpenters.

I can't rebuild an engine, but I can land a 130,000 pound jet on an snow covered runway in a crosswind with the FAA inspector sitting behind me.

Can you rebuild a jet turbine w/afterburner?

I've built a couple. After your first build they become really easy. I test them in my garage at lunch time on week days so that the 15,000 lbs thrust sound doesn't bother the neighbours.

edit yes I rebuilt a Chevy 350 and a MoPar 318 back in the day. With the $2000 worth of tools I might add.

Try rebuilding an automatic trans.

You definitley don't need $2K worth of tools to rebuild engines considering you won't be doing any of the machine work. Common hand tools and maybe a few inexpensive specialty tools will suffice. I rebuild engines all the time and am currently working on a built 347 based on a Ford 302 roller engine. It is going in a 57 Ford Pickup truck....well, it is going in a 98 Explorer frame which we have already set the 57 cab and bed on and will final fit them once the engine is in place. I am helping a buddy with this and he keeps getting crazy ideas so the project is definitely interesting.

Automatic transmissions are a cakewalk too. I don't understand what everyone is so afraid of when it comes to taking them apart. The key is cleanliness but there is little magic involved in rebuilding automatic transmissions. Most only require a few sets of snap ring pliers as the special tools. Other specialty tools are handy but usually not necessary. Learn how and you will save TONS of money since they charge insane rates to rebuild them at a shop.

I can build a house from scratch too Red, in fact I already did it with my dad years ago when him and I built the family lake house. The days of men being adept at mechanical things will come to a close unless the younger generations start putting some effort forward to learn something. When I was a kid we didn't have video games to stay inside and play all day so we went outside and built tree houses and worked on bicycles and such. The problem these days is most fathers are not mechanical and do little to nothing so the kids just follow suit. I make a lot of effort to help the kids in my neigborhood if they want help with cars or other mechanical type things because if I don't there is no one to teach them and I fear we will just end up with a nation full of useless video game playing pansies.

Where did I say anyone sucked? I was merely replying to Tyler's and a few other's posts. I simply implied that video games have destroyed the creativity of most young males these days....and they have. Sitting around building computers is not only easy but it isn't very creative and considering how much of a commodity a lot of the computer industry has become it isn't going to be a great career path in the future for most. You need to get a life. I build computers too but it doesn't consume my life. They are tools and I use them and building them is so damn easy why would I pay some moron to screw up what I can do myself?

Maybe not 2 grand but add up the engine hoist, good qaulity tools, air compresser etc and it adds up quick. You can get away with cheaper stuff if need be.

I help a bud of mine rebuild my tranny (hes a certified rebuilder) and clean is the watch word. Just lotsa small parts and such. Way more complicated too, imo. Probably saved me a grand having him most of it.

Id rather do an engine rebuild over a tranny rebuild anyday.

All you have to do is thread the needle.

Nah, you've got it all wrong. I just have to get a new hamster :p

Note to cubby, most if not all of these posts are being made with tongue firmly placed in cheek. In other words you are not suppose to take what is being posted here seriously..unless it's a comment about Son of Noob being a worthless POS.

Calm down? So you can dish it out but can't take it? That seems about normal these days. You misinterpret what I said and then get your panties in a ruffle....I guess I hit a little to close to home. Spare me and the others the theatrics.

no afterburners on our jets, but I did watch the mechanics switch out an engine once. And I got a little grease on my pants that day.

Why - bolded items.

There are many skills around and most people are not equipped to do all.

To rebuild an engine takes some training, oversight, tools and instructions.

Given time and al the required items, most people could;

Quality may be a different matter.
