As the rest of the country prepares for autumn, we in Arizona will keep our summer clothes in the closet for at least 6 more weeks. I've been getting the fall bug, and have already put out a few Halloween decorations in my house. I thought it would be fun to hear your favorite traditions or memories about autumn. You can include Christmas, even though fall ends on Dec 21st.

I'm originally from Indiana and Illinois, and I particularly miss coming home from school on overcast days, where the streetlights are on at 4:00. People are outside raking and burning leaves, and everyone has sweatshirts and jackets on. I miss campfires in the woods, and organized church hayrides with apple cider. I also like the annual TV specials, such as Charlie Brown's Great Pumpkin, Thanksgiving, and Christmas specials. I especially like Christmas shows and movies. Before NBC bought the rights and decided to show it only twice per year, you could find "It's a Wonderful Life" on TV about 3 times a day in December. One year in high school, I watched it every chance I could. I never tire of that move, and have every line memorized, and even collect memoribilia about the movie.

The sound of the leaves crunching under my feet as I walk through the woods. The smell of leaves burning in a farmer's burn barrel. The crisp, clear Autumn air that seems to fill more than just my lungs. The clear Autumn nights during a new moon when it feels like I can see across the universe. The harvest moon rising orange through the bare branches of the trees in a farmer's woodlot. The smell of dry hay mixed with the diesel smoke of the tractor pulling the hay wagon. I think Autumn is my favorite season, but that might just be the Ohio in me.

i love everything you said about fall and more. For some reason, it is my favorite season. I feel safe and comfortable. Perhaps this is because i have the fondest memories of my childhood in the autumn. My dad and mom would take me to pick pumpkins and go up north (i live in MI) to go on a fall color tour. Just the warmth of the seaon, with family and parties. i cannot describe how much i love fall. Putting up wreaths and making cookies and cakes. That is my heaven.

My favorite thing about Autumn is the way everything looks. All of the colors of the trees are so beautiful.

I also love the weather because it's not too hot and not too cold. :)

Favorite thing about autumn: cooler weather means not sweating my ass off when I'm outside. GA summers suck.

no joke. I went to mass. for my 16th birthday; we took a stroll around waldorff pond, went out to lexington, over to mayflower and salem, and then to boston. God it was beautiful.

For me, I reflect and remember autumn in terms of school life. Now that I'm in college, though, I sort of miss it all. Fall is when the cross-country season is in full swing, and every day after school, I'd spend about three hours at practice. I love watching the weather change from 95 degrees and humid in early September to 55 degrees and cloudy in late September/early October.

In terms of school, fall is that time when I'd get a bit excited about homework because I'd been so bored all summer and I was learning so many new things. People also say that spring is the time of year when people get romantic and stuff like that, but I think of fall as the best time of year for meeting new people (specifically, girls). I meet so many new people in my classes during the fall, and occasionally those meetings turn into dates and steady girlfriends. It's a great time of the year. I met my current girlfriend last fall right around this time, and my favorite moments came when she and I would be walking out to lunch on cloudy, cold overcast days when you need a hooded sweatshirt to block out the wind. Everything just seems so magical, like those moments could go on forever.

My favorite moments of fall have come during cross country meets in late October when it's raining and cold, and I'm running through soggy leaves behind all the other runners, and I see my teammates and girls team members cheering like crazy for me even though I'm in 7th or 8th place rather than 1st or 2nd. I love to remember fall...it's like a new beginning, every year.

EDIT: I subscribed to this thread because it's so awesome. Keep the fall feelings coming!

For some reason nookie is so much more fun after a stroll in the crisp clear air with a pipe of 965 in one hand and the woman in the other, and a mid-afternoon nap in the sun.

Other than that, the cold sucks, and the snow gets old quick, and the shortened daylight is a drag. As soon as all the leaves fall off the trees, we could start right in on spring again.

Ditto. The combine is ready to go, auger is set up, wheel bearings packed on the wagons, .223 loaded for coyote dispersal. Cool nights under the big orange harvest moon drinking coffee and listening to Pink floyd while running large, powerful, noisy machines. It gets no better for me.

That's the attitude people in AZ have. They're so happy that it's 80 degrees or hotter all year round. You should move here.

Autumn is the time of the year for the beginning of the new school year, back to college, time to do some stupid sh*t that we just cant pull off at home.

It is the time of the year where the world is your air conditioner.

The time of year when everything gets a little more colorful than drab green everywhere.

My company has a branch office in Phoenix. My gf is even considering applying to ASU for grad school and then we could both move out there next year.
It's very tempting.
I'm scared to be more than 2 hours' drive from the ocean, though....
