unreal 2 is pretty old now.. but i tried the 1st 10 seconds of it (my regular style) and didnt like it..

but its prob alot better than the amount of time i gave it :D

the real reason i lost interest in it is because it was really single player only.. by that point in time, hearing that i had lost all interest in purchasing a game like that.
i think theres a large contingent out there that followed this thinking on Unreal2

if i'd known doom3 would suck so bad in multiplayer i wouldnt have bought that one either.. but that was one of the few games i ran out of work in the morning to get it on release day
unfortunately, im such a LB (little b****) for that double barrel shotgun from Doom2 that i'll still run out and buy the expansion.. oh well.

In the process of buying from ebay: thief, thief II, and alien vs predator.

Thief III ruled. AVP2 although wasn't great, it was good enough for me to want to check out the first game.

McGee's Alice is a pretty good - and LONG - game .... great gfx for a Qiii engine. . . . (unfortunately) ultimately its a 'hack 'n slash' game . . . still 'fun' ;)

i don't think you'll like the original AvpP if you didn't like the (classic) AvP2.
Thief I is suck . . . 2 and 3 are great.

i didn't know about the "Games" in your sig. :D
OK, here's MY suggestions:

Serious Sam . . . 1st and 2nd Encounter
Max Payne (I&II)
Chronicles of Riddick (!!!!)
PainKiller/BOoH
DeuSex (I&II) (i CANT believe this is not on your list)
KotOR (i HATE this game; turn based shooter RPG . . . EVERYone ELSE likes it) :p)
Star Trek: Voyager Elite Forces (I&II)
NOLF (I&II)
MDKII

We have a lot of games in common from your list . . . . :D

The only one I can think of ATM, which is not in the list in your sig, is Painkiller and expansion pack BoOH.

Good gfx, varied gameplay, replay value. A real sleeper and better than it's demo lets on. Later levels are great.

I hear good things about Chronicles of Riddick etc.

Half Life 1 and 2
Deus Ex
Operation Flashpoint and its expansions
SWAT 3 (and 4 coming out soon)
Hitman Series (1 is still the best in many ways)
Crusader Series
Total Annihilation
Far Cry
Fighters Anthology (Jane's ATF and USNF '97)
Splinter Cell series (Pandora Tommorrow was kind of dissapointing TBH, but Chaos Theory looks sweet)
Halo

Serious Sam was a big shootem up and nothing more. It was cool, but I didn't really like the levels, they weren't as cool as in Quake. Just guys coming at you and you have to shoot them. This one time I fell asleep playing Serious Sam online. It's just too boring a game. I don't know if Second Encounter is much better, but I'm gonn read a review.
I played max payne and part II is on my to buy list.
Chronicles of riddick is also there.
Painkiller is another one of those Serious Sam games that just have you shoot hordes of enemies that infinitely come after you.
DeusEx, I didn't like. I played the first mission and then uninstalled it, there was just too much reading in it for me.
Kotor, I have and will be playing after I beat Jedi Knight 2. I figure it's a long game, might as well wait for last.
I'll check the others. I'm waiting for the thread responses to fade so I can gather all my information.

Comment on Hitman: Unlike Splinter Cell, it seemed all to easy. I have Hitman2, but unless you don't want to, you can blast through the levels and nobody would know, you don't even have to hide the bodies, there just isn't enough danger around. It was a good game, but didn't make me interested in the others.

if you didn't like Serious Sam FE don't bother with the Second Encounter . . . . it is a "twitch" shooter . . . for me it was pure adrenaline - massive amounts of enemies on the screen, Huge Bosses and lots and lots of firepower . . . . no thinking whatsoever. ;)
edit: [believe-it-or-not, i never played ANY of the Quake games . . . other than the Demos . . . i didn't like the levels] :p
:D

Painkiller like Serious Sam? . . . . ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!! :p
you couldn't be more wong

PAINKILLER is in the Bargain Bin!
Surprisingly, it is a game with real depth . . . . read the thread. ;)

i agree with you on DE . . . it took me FOREVER to get into the game . . . . but it is WORTH it . . . a genuine classic hybred-FPS/RPG . . . . actually, i recommend DE:IW to you - get thru the first hour and your 'hooked' - easier learning curve than the original (and just as good - if very different).

even though i really liked SW:JKII:JO (except for the damn jumping), i detest KoTOR's turn-based shooting . . . . but an still slogging thru it (waiting for System Shock 2 to arrive) . .. . if you found DE boring, KotOR is 10x harder to get started (plus a 70 page manual). :p

Quake II was ok, but Quake I was great if you are able to overlook graphics and and didn't mind doing some tweaking to get the best control and compatability. I just beat Quake I last year and I thought it was great and I even beat the expansions too which were also good. Quake II was painfull to finish. The first expansion to Quake II was a bit more interesting with the outside levels, but bugs plagued it and it too became just an extension of Quake II that brought me back to the same boring level designs. It also became painful to finish. The second Quake II expansion was also buggy and seemed to similar to the other games that I just couldn't take it.

i like it - so far . . . . kill kill kill kill kill kill kill but without the 'sameness' that is Doom iii . . . more FUN - like Serious Sam series.
That's a quote from you in the thread you linked.

System Shock 2, I've wanted to play because the demo was cool, but it keeps crashing on my system. I'll check in the support website, if still up, to see what I can do again.
I like to read manuals, but not while playing the game. I can sit down and read, but when I want to play a game - I WANT to play a game, not read. They should've included all that crap in the manual. I almost finished the KOTOR manual. I'll see when I play to see if it's good. I took a risk buying an RPG because they aren't pick up and play for 15 minutes and then set it down like first person shooters, but only time will tell if I enjoy it.

That's ONE of my quotes . . . keep reading . . . especially near the end on the weapons combos, tarot cards, unlocking extra levels - that game has MORE REplay value than ANY other FPS current game! NOT like Serious Sam (except "fun"). . . .

you try PK/BOoH i'll give Quake another 'go'.

That's exactly where i am at with KotOR And search for System Shock (here) . . . there are SEVERAL very recent threads that discuss the 'fixes" and gfx enhancements.

Star Trek Elite Force 1 was actually pretty fun, even though I'm not a Voyager fan.

I got it as the "action pack" bundle that includes the expansion (which only adds a couple of pointless tiny levels and a Jeri Ryan voice pack) plus ST Armada 1 and 2. Unfortunately I could not get ST Armada 1 to run playably under XP with or without using compatiblity mode, but Elite Force ran great in XP native.

The above is a half-asleep long-winded way of saying you can buy Elite Force 1 by itself without missing much :)

So far after trying demos, I've figured something out about myself that has to do with games:

I love the immersiveness of a FPS. I can also deal with TPS (Third Person Shooters).
RTS games are non immersive, and while I realize that they have an involved single player, the main game is really online. That's in my opinion. RPG games for the computer are just too annoyingly difficult, just with the customization and options. I was trying out the Baldur's Gate2 Demo and it must've taken me like 20 minutes just to get the game and then it was just too strange, no very immersive. I was picking customizations to characters that I wouldn't know if I was gonna need to use them or not. You are picking spells and things to use in a world that you have no knowledge from. Just seems too weird to me. Not fun. I love console RPGs better. Silent storm seemed like an awsome idea, but not fun to control. If it was like a console Real-Time-Fighting RPG, that would have been cool.

From all the games that I've read about and played demos, I've eliminated many. I couldn't find many as well, probably about a quarter weren't even listed in IGN or gamespot. I haven't played the shooter demos yet, but I plan on it still.

Here are the games that have the most chance at ending up in my library so far:

Delta Force
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Marathon
No One Live forever
Star Trek: Elite Force
MDKII

Small list, I know, but many games were RPG's and RTS's. I want to thank all who posted and even if you didn't post a game that made the list, it still held some value in finding out what type of games I liked the most.

Prince of persia, I've tried before, but the controls turned me away from the otherwise great game. But I'm gonna give it another shot.
Marathon, might be able to get this old shooter on Ebay, hope it installs, unlike he Duke Nukem 3d demo.
No One Lives forever, I've also tried before and didn't like, but seems like I could give it another try.
MDKII was great when I played the demo for Dreamcast. Should be just as good for PC.

i like and recommend the bottom 3 games on your list . . . . i don't know the others. . . . may i suggest also NOLF II (instead of NOLF - FIRST! . . . . it's shorter than the original and the gfx are very nice . . . if you like its style, go back and play the first one.

MDK II suffers as a PC port with irritating jumping puzzles . . . . a little cartoonish but the wicked humour was top notch . . . . i still think i have my old game . . . somewhere . . . yep, it's from 2000 so should be ok for XP.

If you like ST:EFI, then by all means play EFII . . . . basically the "same" game with better gfx.

i know exactly what you mean about RPGs . . . the learning curve is STEEP - KotOR's manual is 72 pages - and Turn-based shooting is simply crap (compared to FPS) . . . that said, i am playing my first RPG - KotOR- it took me 12 hours to get "into it" and it is pretty engrossing . . . like "watching" a really good novel.

IF KotOR had - imo - "real-time" battles, it's be "heaven" - even for a FPSer . . . something like the old game Sacrifice where you give "orders" to your troop's AI ahead of the battle and then jump into the fray yourself or direct the troops in real time and none of this "moving cancels battle" nonsense.

IF you EVER consider a RPG, then KoTOR is the game . . .

i just got System Shock 2 and it looks to be a great game . . . . there are updated gfx and many mods available . . . very much like a RPG in that you get to completely customize your character but still very much a FPS with REplay value as there are 3 distinct branches you can specialize in . . . however - believe it or not - i will finish KoTOR first.

good luck with KOTOR. Haven't started it yet and there are probably gonna be a bunch of FPS I play first before I get there, but I'll let you know what happens if this thread is still available.
